Job Summary

The Strategist (Institutional Accessibility Initiatives) works independently and reports to the Director, Institutional Initiatives Planning & Evaluation. The Strategist oversees the university’s accessibility planning and compliance monitoring processes, maintains the online Accessibility Hub, and establishes and coordinates mechanisms for effective and efficient communication and collaboration across the network of central and decentralized offices and champions working to advance accessibility. The Strategist is a key consultant for and contributor to UBC’s accessibility communities of practice and ecosystem, including committees and teams established to advance UBC’s accessibility priorities.
Organizational Status
The Strategist (Institutional Accessibility Initiatives) works independently and reports to the Director, Institutional Initiatives Planning & Evaluation.
Work Performed
- In partnership with relevant community members, champions and facilitates the development, implementation, evaluation, and progress reporting of the university’s Accessibility Plan, supporting the university to meet its Accessible BC (ABC) Act legislative obligations and broader disability equity and inclusion aspirations.
- Leads and facilitates collaborative processes with academic and administrative partners to develop, implement, and evaluate accessibility plans, approaches, and projects.
- Identifies and works to mitigate risk factors that could impact the successful implementation of change efforts.
- Prepares resources, reports, publications and other written work as required by the EIO.
- Works in close partnership with UBC’s Accessibility Committee (AC), supporting the nomination, onboarding and recognition of AC members, in accordance with the AC Terms of Reference.
- Attends meetings of Accessibility Planning Team, providing information to senior leaders, as required.
- Liaises with provincial representatives regarding the ABC Act and compliance requirements.
- Prepares and presents regular reports to the AC and other relevant community members on the University’s status with respect to ABC Act compliance and broader goals.
- Researches, drafts and consults on the development of policies, procedures and guidelines that support UBC in implementing and complying with the ABC Act and that advance the creation of an accessible, equitable and inclusive campus environment for persons with disabilities.
- Initiates and maintains collaborative working relationships with individuals, units and groups working on accessibility, disability equity and inclusion activities in order to ensure the development and sharing of best practices.
- Develops strategies to enhance ABC Act compliance within the Equity & Inclusion Office and, externally, as required.
