Job Summary

Organizational Status

The Birth Place Lab (BPL), a research unit within the Department of Family Practice, facilitates transdisciplinary, community-based participatory action research aimed at improving access to high quality perinatal services, from preconception to early parenting. The BPL supports multi-national, multi-stakeholder teams as they collaborate on quantitative, qualitative and mixed methods provincial, national, and international research projects, and hosts trainees from midwifery, medicine, public health, and other disciplines. The BPL internal team includes the PI, Research Associate, Operations and Administrative Manager, Research and Communications staff. The BPL also includes doctoral/post doctoral students, work-learn and flex students. All team members liaise with Co-Is, external partners, and community partners who co-lead projects.

The BPL currently holds several grants that support research and knowledge translation on person-centered and respectful care for childbearing families, especially those from historically marginalized populations. These novel research projects are poised to inform health policy, system and service leaders about pragmatic, community-responsive modes of increasing accountability for rights-based, high quality health services for childbearing families. Current research studies are funded by various Tri-Council agencies and foundations, and are institutionally supported through the Division of Midwifery, Department of Family Practice, Faculty of Medicine, the Women's Health Research Institute at BC Women's Hospital, and Child and Family Research Institute. The core research team is located in Vancouver, though transdisciplinary research and community partners are spread across North America, Europe, Africa, India, the UK, South America, and Oceania.

Work Performed- With supervision and direction from the Operations Manager and Birthswell (Communications Consultants for BPL), generate communications for dissemination via BPL social media and monitor and update BPL social media and websites-
- Organize meetings for projects and work in co-operation with members of the research team to provide regular reports of progress; take meeting notes.- Calendar management for lab PI and scheduling of meetings for the PI, and members of the BPL team, as necessary- Collaborate with, and take direction from as needed, the Projects Coordinator to accurately track requests and usage of BPL generated accountability tools (e,g MADM, MORi, MIST)- Liaise with digital data display technicians to enhance systems to respond to, track, and display requests for tools, trainee, and community reach.- Manages and updates contacts and project status for research collaborators, trainees, and early career scholars, including teams that use the measures and outputs of the BPL.- Supports policy and public facing knowledge translation activities as needed.- Supports PI, Co-PIs, and Research Associate and community research partners to implement and deliver study protocols; and to manage citations, prepare manuscripts, articles, abstracts, posters and presentations for academic journals and conferences- Supports maintenance of research study records, including documents and communications in accordance with UBC and funding agencies- In collaboration with the Projects Coordinator and Operations Manager, develop standard communications and documentation protocols for the BPL.- Supports Operations Manager for finance administration, including tracking honoraria, processing reimbursements and reconciling project related expenses to UBC credit card.- Other duties as required.

Consequence of Error/Judgement

Errors in the Research Assistants work will hold serious consequences for the timeliness and quality of the research project and overall BPL outputs.

Supervision Received
