**Position Summary**:
The primary purpose of this position is to operate and maintain all University mechanical controls systems that serve the campus community. The Controls Technician will strive to maximize equipment lifecycle and minimize energy consumption. Work may involve the installation and commissioning of new controls systems as well as the maintenance, repair and retrofitting of existing systems.

**Primary Duties**:
Reporting to the Supervisor of Controls, this position is responsible for, but not limited to, the maintenance, construction, repair and installation of control systems for steam heating, hot water heating, chilled water, domestic water, fire life safety systems, refrigeration and air handling equipment. Responsible for the monitoring and programming of the building automation systems and the Energy Management Information System. Also, this position is responsible for commissioning, balancing and and inspecting new spaces and buildings, including verifying sequences of operation, testing failure modes to ensure the safety to people and equipment, as well as cataloging of new equipment.

**Duties and responsibilities**:

- Provide safe, comfortable, functional spaces of all the University programs and activities.
- Monitor, maintain and repair the campus building controls systems.
- Design, install, modify and/or repair all University control systems and mechanical infrastructure
- Responsible for operating and maintaining control systems for the University’s district heating and cooling system.
- Maintain indoor air quality and respond to customer concerns.
- Maintain and operate the University Building Energy Management System.
- Troubleshoot problems, make decisions and provide solutions in building systems efficiencies
- Respond to emergency situations in order to resolve issues as quickly as possible.
- Maintain current knowledge of the rapidly evolving building automation field.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.

Position Requirements

**Position Qualifications**:

- Successful completion of grade 12 with five years related experience.
- Either, or combination of ;
- Valid Saskatchewan Journeypersons certificate in instrumentation;
- Valid Interprovincial Journeyperson certificate in Instrumentation; or a Technical Diploma in Instrumentation Technology; or,
- A.Sc.T (with extensive building automation or controls experience).
- All certification(s) must be combined with commercial and industrial related experience.
- Demonstrated knowledge of Honeywell and/or Johnson building automation systems preferred.
- Demonstrated knowledge in the use of various tools, equipment and machinery associated with the controls trade.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to read and understand drawing, schematics and associated specifications.
- Ability to work independently with mínimal supervision.
- Strong interpersonal skills to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with staff, the general public, external consultants, contractors and vendors.
- Knowledge of and skill in the use of computer systems.
- Training, upgrading and continuing education related to the position.
- Possession of a valid Saskatchewan drivers license.
- Possession of a Fireman’s Refrigeration Engineer, General Gas, Phoenix/Celeris and Cross-connection certification would be an asset.
- Ability to organize multiple tasks while meeting deadlines and maintaining quality.
- Ability to identify and analyze mechanical problems and to formulate solutions and implement decisions.
- Have knowledge of, understand and comply with University health and safety requirements, Saskatchewan Occupational Health And Safety Regulations, all safe work procedures and practices applicable to the position.
- Ability to properly use saftey equipment, machine guards, and safety devices. All personal protective equipment must be used appropriate.
- Ability to identify and report unsafe acts, work place hazards, and incidents that result (or could result) in injury.
- Ability to work and encourage others to work and act safely.

Physical Demands

**Working Conditions and Physical Effort**:
May be required to work overtime and weekends; may be required to work various shifts; required to be on the call out schedule for emergency after hour calls. Physical activity is a primary part of the job. Requires the ability to lift, push or pull objects up to 50 pounds. Work will be performed at heights, in crawl spaces, on roof tops and will include the use of ladders and powered mobile lifts.
