- Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) and Policy Development and Review
- Animal User Training Programs
**Responsibilities**:
The Veterinarian, Research Support provides professional veterinary services in support of Western’s animal-based research programs and those of its affiliates. These services are performed in compliance with all applicable regulatory requirements and in accordance with the guidelines, procedures and policies of the university. This position works collaboratively with all stakeholders to provide enhanced animal health and welfare, advance the strategic objectives of the unit, and support the vision, mission and values of Western Research and Western University. The Veterinarian will also provide professional guidance related to facilities construction and renovations, as well as the migration of research programs to new facilities.
**Qualifications**:
**Education**:
- Doctor of Veterinary Medicine licensed in Ontario
- Post-graduate training in laboratory animal medicine
- Active license from the College of Veterinarians of Ontario
**Experience**:
- 7 years clinical and Compliance Assurance veterinary services in a complex multi-facility biomedical research environment
- Health monitoring and disease control programs and strategies
- Protocol, procedure and policy development, review and implementation
- Direct supervision and management of staff
- Project management experience preferred
- Facility design and operations (including inclusion and exclusion barriers, level 2 and 3 biocontainment) is preferred
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- In-depth knowledge of best practices for handling sensitive and confidential information
- In-depth knowledge of the regulations and guidelines governing animal research
- In-depth knowledge of best approaches for monitoring and maintaining animal health
- Proficient in veterinary diagnosis, treatment, surgical and anesthetic procedures in a multi-species research environment
- Proficient in networking, researching, comparative analysis and information synthesis in order to make fully informed decisions
- Demonstrated ability to build and maintain strong professional and collaborative relationships with colleagues, researchers and other key stakeholders
- Excellent oral and written communication skills to translate information into easily understood terms, summarize information, and provide a rationale for action
- Commitment to continuous professional development and learning
- Ability to work well under pressure and use good judgment in assessing difficult situations
- Demonstrated ability to work independently, take initiative, be accountable and successfully complete assignments and tasks
- Ability to excel in a fast-paced work environment with changing deadlines and priorities
- Ability to work within a flexible schedule to accommodate research activities
