Job Title: Financial and Operations Manager

Compensation:

- $55,000 - $70,000 annual salary range, depending on experience
- Health benefits package
- Three weeks paid vacation

Term: Ongoing after 3 months of probation
Work location: Vancouver, BC (Remote)

The Society Promoting Environmental Conservation (SPEC) is a charitable organization that promotes practical solutions in the areas of sustainable food systems, zero waste, renewable energy, sustainable transportation, and the Elders Circle. Since 1969, we have been empowering communities and individuals to take action and build a greener future.

Together with the Board Chair, the Financial and Operations Manager provides strategic leadership to the organization. Key duties include financial management, fundraising,
administration, human resources and supervision, and strategic planning. The position reports directly to the Board of Directors.

Essential duties and responsibilities

1) Leadership, mission, and strategy: Work with the Board of Directors and staff to ensure that the organization’s mission is fulfilled through its programs, strategic
planning, managing key partnerships, and community outreach
- Continue developing SPEC as an equitable and inclusive space for volunteers, staff, and members of the community
- With the Board of Directors, engage strategic planning processes that enable SPEC to successfully fulfill its mission
- Lead a team of staff and volunteers to implement SPEC’s programs
- Lead the development of partnerships and opportunities

2) Financial management and budgeting: Work with the Board of Directors to develop sufficient resources to ensure the financial health of the organization
- Maintain SPEC’s fiscal integrity through sound financial management and reporting
- With the Board of Directors, reach fund development targets and develop other funding resources necessary to support SPEC’s mission
- Work with SPEC’s accountant and Treasurer to process and prepare monthly payroll, staff expense reimbursements, and accounts payable in a timely manner
- With SPEC’s accountant, reconcile all contributions and expenses through SPEC’s accounts
- Monitor and manage all accounts to ensure correct allocation to restricted/unrestricted funds
- With SPEC’s accountant, ensure all CRA reports are accurate and submitted on time
- Communicate regularly with program staff about their budgets and financial needs

3) Operations: Oversee and participate in the daily operations of SPEC
- Maintain employment and administrative policies and procedures for all functions and day-to-day operations
- Hire, supervise, support, and collaborate with staff, including staff meetings, reviews, and problem solving
- Prepare and complete contracts and agreements made with SPEC staff and external partners
- Oversee all administrative and program staff
- Maintain an inventory of standard SPEC branded templates for contracts and agreements
- Maintain SPEC’s digital file management system

4) Governance and Board relations: Work with the Board of Directors to fulfill the organization’s mission
- With the Board, update and implement SPEC’s strategic direction
- Communicate effectively with the Board and provide timely and accurate information necessary for the Board to function effectively and to make informed decisions
- Report to and work closely with the Board in policy decisions, fundraising initiatives, and to increase the overall visibility of the organization
- Participate in and support monthly Board meetings (preparation, delivery, follow up)
- Other duties as assigned by the Board of Directors

**Qualifications**:

- 3-5 years of relevant experience in nonprofit management, fund development, and other nonprofit leadership roles
- Post-secondary education in business/nonprofit management
- Knowledge/training in environmental issues, resource management, or other relevant areas
- Knowledge of fundraising strategies and donor relations unique to the nonprofit sector
- Experience working effectively with a Board of Directors
- Demonstrated budget management skills including budget preparation, analysis, decision-making and reporting
- Strong organizational and administrative abilities including planning, delegating, facilitating team meetings, and program development
- Ability to convey SPEC’s vision to staff, volunteers, and donors
- Ability to think creatively and strategically
- Experience and skills to recruit and manage staff and volunteers
- Strong written and oral communication skills
- Strong public speaking ability
- Proficient with Google Suite and Quickbooks and familiar with work productivity platforms such as Slack, Asana, others

A combination of education and relevant work experience may be considered.

This position is remote and requires semi-regular travel to Vancouver.
