Job Summary:
This position is responsible for the acquisition, creation, preparation, rental / loan, and maintenance of all theatrical properties required for productions and events produced by the Department of Theatre and Film.
Organizational Status:
Reports to the Administrator of the Department of Theatre and Film and Manager of Theatre Production in Department of Theatre and Film.
Work Performed:
Provides properties support for department productions, events and classes, and for other University or external events when feasible and appropriate.
Ensures safety regulations are followed.
Gives demonstrations and provides assistance with property making for Theatre labs, lectures, and discussion groups (e.g., sculpting, carpentry, upholstery, moulding and casting, fabric dyeing, and finishing painting). Issues and arranges properties during rehearsals and stage performances.
Participates in planning of stage property requirements by contributing ideas and by providing cost estimates.
Researches, creates, or acquires stage properties through purchase, loan or rental. Maintains cost records, including UBC P-Card reconciliations, and plans purchases to maintain expenditures within budget allocations. Estimates material and time requirements related to properties as part of the production budgeting process.
Provides properties for class work. Maintains property shop equipment, inventory, properties, and properties storage areas.
Oversees external loans and rentals of equipment and properties.
Acts as a community resource person for information on properties and materials.
Supervises ancillary staff and students assigned to work in the properties department.
Lifts heavy items weighing up to 50lbs.
Performs other duties as required.
Consequence of Error/Judgement:
The Properties specialist works with materials, chemical adhesives and coatings that require safe usage and storage. Failure to follow adequate safety measures could result in harm to students, staff or faculty. Failure to manage budgeted costs could result in negative financial impact for the department.
Supervision Received:
Works under the supervision of the Manager of Theatre Production.
Supervision Given:
Supervises additional part time staff as required by productions. Supervises the work of between 6-9 students in the Properties shop. Supervises work-study/work learn positions, and temporary staff. Provides guidance of student work/projects.
Qualifications:
High School graduation and Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline.
Minimum5 years relevant experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
A high level of skill in all areas of properties fabrication.
Good communication skills, the ability to work effectively as an individual or as a team member.
The ability to organize and supervise the work of others, and proven ability to interact well with students are essential.
Ability to work effectively with mínimal supervision.Ability to maintain accuracy and attention to detail.
Outlook.
Ability to operate job-related equipment (e.g., drill press, soldering gun, bottle, airbrush, glue gun,
table saw, pneumatic tools, band saw).
Physical ability to perform the duties of the job. (e.g., lifting up to 50lbs, standing, working at
heights, operating elevators/lifts).
Ability to read, interpret, and understand job-related technical drawings. (e.g.,
blueprints, electrical circuit diagrams, plans, work sketches)
Valid Class 5 Drivers License.
Ability to hold a Firearms Possession and Acquisitions License with Restricted Privileges, an assett.
Ability to remain calm, decisive, effective, and safe in emergency or crisis situations.
