As part of the undergraduate power laboratories, the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) maintains laboratories for power electronics, power distribution and rotating machines which are equipped with a wide variety of specialized test and measurement equipment for the purpose of undergraduate instruction. The Technician will be responsible for installing, configuring, securing, troubleshooting and maintaining the hardware. The Technician will support undergraduate power engineering courses at the third and fourth year levels, including the organization and supervision of undergraduate students, teaching assistants and any sessional faculty in the labs. The Technician will provide assistance with lectures and will monitor adherence to laboratory safety. The Technician will also produce, develop, and update lab procedures and assignments (with solutions) and supporting material as necessary for all power-oriented courses. The Technician will be responsible for the supply and maintenance of lab related material (procedures, manuals, etc.) for course-specific websites.
**_ Job Summary:_**
Responsible for providing technical support within a laboratory environment. Assist lab instructors by designing, preparing, conducting, and demonstrating experiments.
**_ Purpose and Key Functions:_**
- Collaborate with the instructor to determine how the experiment will be designed to align with and reinforce the defined learning concept.
- Design new and review and modify existing laboratory experiments.
- Design, build and operate nonstandard equipment, test systems, and devices for use in the laboratory.
- Design and fabricate instrumentation required for undergraduate teaching laboratories and post graduate research projects.
- Set up and conduct both standardized and non-standardized experiments.
- Assess and mitigate the physical risks associated with the set-up and demonstration of experiments.
- Utilize various software packages and established techniques to analyze data and interpret results.
- Observe details and maintain accurate records of experiments and results.
- Assess the need for, and provide recommendations for, the acquisition of laboratory equipment, tools, and supplies.
- Create spreadsheets and databases to input, store, and retrieve information.
- Provide technical support and assistance to students and instructors.
- Demonstrate the proper use of laboratory equipment to all users in the
laboratory.
- Write procedures for testing methods to be used in laboratory manuals.
- Update and maintain detailed records of laboratory preparations, procedures, and results.
- Develop and implement standard operating procedures for equipment and experiments.
- Log incident reports.
- Ensure that all individuals adhere to established safety policies and have completed the required laboratory safety training.
- Exchange technical and scientific information with colleagues, faculty, and students.
- Attend and participate in regular meetings with teaching assistants and others to ensure lab experiments are understood and conducted accordingly.
- Complete initial laboratory set-up in accordance with laboratory schedules and requirements.
- Develop and prepare secondary calibration standards and other materials required for the laboratory.
- Calibrate and maintain scientific equipment and instruments and conduct minor repairs.
- Plan, schedule, and coordinate the availability of laboratory equipment and resources.
- Coordinate major repairs with vendors and outside contractors.
- Responsible for the daily maintenance of the laboratory including the set up, take down, and clean up after each experiment.
- Remove waste in accordance with applicable waste handling guidelines.
- Update and maintain inventory control of laboratory equipment, supplies, and materials.
- Source pricing information and order materials and equipment required for the laboratory.
- Operate a variety of power tools such as welders, lathes, milling machines, soldering irons and other power equipment as necessary.
**_ Supervision:_**
Ensure adherence to quality standards and procedures for short-term staff.
Provide orientation and show procedures to others.
**_ Requirements:_**
Bachelor's degree in a relevant field of study.
Requires 3 years of relevant experience.
**_ Additional Information:_**
The Technician is expected to work during week days. Weekend work may be required only in the case of emergencies. The position requires in-person presence in McMaster and occasional virtual interactions with faculty and students.
