The Opportunity

CBC News is looking for an exceptional editorial leader to be at the helm of our national Health, Climate, Science, Business, Entertainment and Education content unit teams and drive our editorial news coverage. If you’re an experienced journalist and an inclusive leader with ideas about setting a news agenda and developing staff, this is the opportunity for you.

You have knowledge of the CBC News mission and deeply understand the audience needs of traditional and emerging platforms. You understand what it is to create a strong story for The National, CBC NN, YouTube, About That, CBC’s new streaming channels, Your World Tonight, Your World This Hour, World Report and Front Burner. In particular, you are very familiar with the needs of our digital platforms - be it text, video, audio or live content. You have ideas of how the content unit teams can play a key role in the development of modular video and the CBC’s move to dayparted video.

While you oversee the content units, you are a partner to the domestic news executive producer and the world news executive producer, sharing responsibility to ensure the day's priorities are met. You are able to step in to run national story meetings on behalf of the domestic news executive producer as needed and troubleshoot daily coverage plans as required. You can step in to backfill either of the other executive producer roles.

You also work closely with leadership in our local newsrooms and other parts of the CBC to partner on content and share expertise. You are driven to end silos at the CBC and bring teams together with shared goals.

While editorial excellence is an important element of this job, the role also requires strong leadership skills. Working alongside the Managing Editor of domestic news and content units, you guide and support your senior producers as they develop new journalists and help veteran journalists grow. You provide regular feedback to senior producers, reporters, producers and writers. You work with the Managing Editor to schedule your teams and handle their timecards and paperwork. You care for the physical and mental wellbeing of your team and coordinate support with the Managing Editor as required.

What you do:

- EDITORIAL_- Drive editorial by ensuring teams produce daily content that includes breaking and trending news, enterprise and impact stories in the areas of Health, Science & Climate, Education, Entertainment, Business. The ability to drive enterprise stories while also being responsive to stories that emerge is crucial.- Respond and coordinate coverage of major events connected to the content unit beats.- Understand and drive the CBC’s 5R editorial strategy (Relevance, Responsiveness, Representation, Range, Reach/Retention).- Partner closely with the domestic and world executive producers organize daily news needs or big breaking news as required.- Ensure teams are meeting the audience needs of traditional and emerging news platforms. Understand the content needs for The National, CBC NN, YouTube, About That, the CBC’s new streaming channels, Your World Tonight, Your World This Hour, World Report and Front Burner.- Have strong understanding of Digital platforms - digital text, video, audio, live content. Work closely with Digital executive producers and local digital leaders to ensure teams are continuing to meet audience needs in these spaces- Understand and execute the CBC’s strategic move to create modular video and daypart video publication.- TEAM _LEADERSHIP/DEVELOPMENT_- Oversee 3 senior producers and teams of roughly 30 reporters/producers in the units of Health/Climate/Science, Entertainment/Education and Business.- Develop/give feedback on leadership skills of the senior producers.
