Job Summary

The High Throughput Facility, situated in the Life Science Institute (LSI), will support diverse research initiatives through the LSI and Bioproducts Institute, and provide core support to researchers and highly qualified personnel (HQP)participating in small molecule screening, enzyme discovery, automation of workflows and sequencing workflows. The position is responsible for a wide range of functions in order to provide technical support for all the available infrastructure. Other responsibilities include scheduling projects, completing minor equipment repairs and calibrations, and providing datasets to clients.

Organizational Status

This position reports to the High Throughput Screening Facility Manager. The incumbent will act as a liaison between the manager and various project participants including members of the Life Sciences Institute, Bioproducts Institute, and other members of the research community.

Work Performed
- Operates high-throughput infrastructure including acoustic liquid handler, QPix2, Biomek FX, Biomek3000, and other related plate-based liquid handling systems.
- Operates and provides support for an OnChip sorter, Cellomics HCA setup and a miSeq.
- Orders supplies to maintain stock of items required for equipment operation and maintains freezer inventory of libraries and reagents.
- Assists graduate students, postdoctoral research fellows and others as directed by supervisor
- Assists in developing multimedia materials and updating a website for automation equipment.
- Provides operations support for automation mentioned above, builds and manages workflows enabling data generation, and organizes data sets resulting from completed activities
- Diagnoses and troubleshoots errors or malfunctions associated with automation equipment.
- Performs sequencing, colony picking, gridding and re-arraying, assay development, and other operational tasks associated with automation infrastructure and high-throughput biology programs
- Prepares written results of automation experiments
- Produces timely & quality reports on activities.
- Ensures scheduled events occur and are completed
- Other duties as assigned

Consequence of Error/Judgement

A degree of judgment and initiative is required in making appropriate decisions. Errors in judgment may negatively impact the reputation of the facility, institute and the University.

Supervision Received

The successful applicant works under the supervision of Manager of the Facility, but is expected to progress to mínimal supervision in their daily tasks.

Supervision Given

None expected. However, as the successful applicant becomes familiar with protocols and procedures they will be asked to transfer this knowledge to incoming lab members and to assist in their instruction.

Preferred Qualifications

Completion of a relevant technical program or a university degree in a relevant discipline and a minimum three years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Laboratory experience is required. Automation and/or coding experience would be an asset. Familiarity with automation equipment listed above preferred. Should be comfortable with bash scripting, spreadsheets, word processing, information management, instrumentation, and report writing. Good written and oral communication skills are required.
