Job Summary

The Lab Technician will work on proteomics projects and contribute to the daily operations and maintenance of a research laboratory. The individual will be joining a dedicated and highly motivated team with expertise in proteomics, cell biology, molecular biology and microbiology, with a research focused on protein folding and degradation. Emphasis for this position is to coordinate aspects for the general operations of the lab along with preparation of proteomics samples and molecular biology experiments.

Organizational Status

The Lab Technician will assist the Principle Investigator with many fundamental aspects of their research program. The individual will interact closely with members of the research group including graduate and undergraduate students, as well as departmental staff and administrators. The Lab Technician is fundamental to the ongoing success of the lab.

Work Performed
- Plan and perform standard biochemical and molecular biology experiments
- Prepare samples for protein mass spectrometry analysis
- Work with an automated liquid handler and other lab equipment
- Help with data analysis of protein mass spectrometry results
- Perform cloning and expression experiments
- Assist lab members in troubleshooting experiments
- Assist senior level researchers with the design of experiments and/or development of new techniques and methodologies to achieve research goals
- Implement and adapt standard operating procedures for lab research projects on new lab equipment
- Maintain detailed and accurate records of experimental procedures
- Analyse and compile data for report preparation, present results, and contribute towards the preparation of scientific manuscripts
- Identify and implement strategies and procedures to ensure the safe operation of research laboratories. Ensure compliance with safety regulations in the lab
- Maintain a clean and fully functional lab environment
- Maintain lab databases and repositories
- Order laboratory supplies and small equipment
- Ship hazardous and non-hazardous reagents in accordance with current regulations
- Maintain equipment in the laboratory, which includes maintaining contracts with equipment manufacturers, and coordinating repairs with vendors and suppliers
- Provide training, onboarding and offboarding of lab personnel
- Supervise undergraduate students who assist with lab organization
- Coordinate weekly meetings for the research team
- Interact with departmental staff and other organization administrators on various lab related tasks
- Carry out any other related duties as required in keeping with the qualifications and requirements of positions in this classification

Consequence of Error/Judgement

Exercises judgement, responsibility, and initiative related to research projects and the functioning of the lab. Incorrect decisions could jeopardize research progress, collaborations, finances and employee safety, and adversely impact future project objectives and personnel. Poor judgment would result in loss of experimental data and delay in conducting research.

Work will be discussed with the Principle Investigator in weekly meetings or as needed. The successful applicant will be responsible for errors in their work, for reporting problems and mistakes in a timely way, and for correcting those errors.

Supervision Received

Reports directly to the Principle Investigator to ensure priorities are addressed. Works under minimum supervision, receiving detailed instructions on the assignment of new duties and thereafter only on new or unusual problems. For each project, works with other lab member(s) or collaborator(s) to ensure effective work progress.

Supervision Given

The applicant will work as part of a team. They may have joint responsibility for supervising and training more junior personnel, and will supervise junior personnel tasked with lab organization.
