Overall Accountability
The Speech Language Pathologist works collaboratively to enable kindergarten children and students in grades 1-6 who have been diagnosed with severe and mild/moderate speech language development in an inclusive kindergarten or other classroom setting. Speech language pathology strategies are incorporated into the child’s kindergarten program, as well as students in grades 1-6, in authentic and functional ways.
The Speech Language Pathologist interacts with teachers, Education Assistants, other members of the school learning team, Occupational Therapists, Physical Therapists and Department of Learning Services to develop in-class, inclusive programs to address and identify speech and language delays (using assessment as required) and programming to meet the needs that have been impacting the child’s/student’s performance at school.
Specific Accountabilities
- Evaluates the child’s/student’s level of functioning in areas of speech language, classroom work and structures, as well as unstructured times
- Supports children/students and parents/legal guardians to implement programs, develop skills to allow greater success in the classroom and to permit carry-over from classroom learning to the home setting and into the community
- Administers, scores, and interprets standardized speech language assessments
- Diagnoses speech, language, and swallowing disorders
- Writes assessment and treatment reports (assist with goals for Learner Support Plans (LSP), year-end summaries, etc.) to be shared with parents/legal guardians, members of the school learning team and Department of Learning Services as well as external professionals
- Provides ongoing observation of development in the areas of cognition, self-help skills, socialization/play skills and behaviour, in conjunction with other members of the school learning team
- Provides skills and goals for an inclusive classroom setting, home setting and new environments using the LSP
- Leads instruction and activities with large and small groups of children
- Collaborate with other therapists, when possible, to demonstrate cross-connection, i.e. behaviour and language strategies
**Qualifications**:
- Education:
- Masters of Science Degree in Speech Language Pathology and experience as noted below; or
- Bachelors of Science in in Speech Language Pathology and experience as noted below
- Experience:
- MSc SLP - one (1) to three (3) years’ experience direct pediatric or early childhood speech and language intervention; including working with children aged 3½ - 6 years
- BSc SLP - minimum of ten (10) years’ experience direct pediatric or early childhood speech and language intervention; including working with children aged 3½ - 6 years
- Registered with the Alberta College of Speech - Language Pathologists and Audiologists (ACSLPA); continuing professional development as per ACSLPA guidelines
- Valid Alberta Driver’s License and a vehicle in good operating condition
- Excellent communication, organization, interpersonal and prioritization skills
- Proven collaboration and team building skills
