**Government House Tour Guide**
**Position Summary**
Government House is the office and official residence of the Lieutenant Governor and the ceremonial home of all British Columbians. The house is located on the traditional territory of the Songhees and Esquimalt First Nations, in the heart of the Rockland neighbourhood in Victoria, BC.
Reporting to the Director of Communications and Programmes, Tour Guides are responsible for delivering 45-60 minute tours up to five times per day. Applicants must be comfortable leading groups and quickly adapting their tours to meet the needs of our many different visitors from diverse groups such as schools and special interest clubs. In addition, Tour Guides act as greeters to welcome visitors to Government House. This is a part-time, casual employment position and work hours will largely be weekends and evenings.
**Key Responsibilities**
- Conducts informative educational tours incorporating information on the architecture, history, ongoing Reconciliation efforts, and the vice-regal role of Government House and the Lieutenant Governor situated within the wider historical context of British Columbia and Victoria. Must be comfortable interacting with a wide variety of audiences and guests including elementary and high school groups, local and international visitors, and themed travel groups.
- Conducts and adapts tours to meet the needs of specific audiences.
- Responds to questions from visitors.
- Follows established policies and procedures for Tour Guides.
- Welcomes tour guests to Government House at the Front Door.
- Provides information to visitors about Government House and guided tours.
- Manages tour registration check-in with GH Programmes staff member.
- Records tours statistics.
- Works in collaboration with other Government House staff to ensure a positive visitor experience.
- Complete training provided to guides prior to commencing duties.
- Create reports on weekly tours.
- Will act as a Representative of The Office of the Lieutenant Governor, Government House, and by extension the Province, ability to represent your self in the manner fitting of the office and house.
- This is a part-time, casual employment position and work hours will largely be weekends and evenings.
**Decision Making/Independence**
- No formal leadership/supervisory responsibilities
- Tour Guides must respond to questions and requests from visitors and act according to procedures outlined during training presentations and in their training manual.
- Tour Guides must work with security staff to ensure compliance with current Public Health orders along with the safety and security of their colleagues and visitors.
**Selection Criteria**
- Education, Training, and Experience_
- Strongly prefer experience in public speaking before large audiences and/or school groups;
- Strongly prefer customer-related experience, volunteer or professional, providing service to diverse groups;
- Familiarity with Victoria/BC/Canadian/Indigenous history will be considered an asset;
- Familiarity with Reconciliation and EDI concepts will be considered an asset;
- Interpretation or language abilities will be considered an asset.
- Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities_
- Familiarity with the vice-regal role of the Lieutenant Governor as the Queen’s representative in British Columbia.
- Knowledge and interest in British Columbia’s political and cultural history.
- Understanding and appreciation of how to communicate effectively to visitors of different ages and cultures.
- Some understanding of public education principles, concepts, and methodologies.
- Must possess excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Must possess excellent teamwork skills.
- Ability to communicate comfortably, with tact and diplomacy, before large audiences.
- Ability to answer, refer, or act on a wide variety of questions in an efficient, courteous, discreet, and tactful manner.
- Ability to think on your feet and adapt to rapidly changing circumstances.
