The Workforce Safety and Employee Health Branch is seeking a Work Experience Student who will assist the Hazardous Materials (Hazmat) Consultant with performing operational occupational health and safety tasks to support Business Areas across the organization. As a student in the Safety Systems and Health Services section, you will gain experience with hazardous building materials and exposure to other safety and health programs and services. The Work Experience Student will assist the Hazardous Materials (Hazmat) Consultant with performing operational occupational health and safety tasks to support Business Areas across the organization. As a student in the Safety Systems and Health Services section, you will gain experience with hazardous building materials and other safety aspects.

Responsibilities Include:

- Support supervisor with on-site inspections of identified asbestos containing building materials to assess the condition of the materials
- Remove old mechanical room signs and install new signs on-site
- Assist the Hazardous Materials Consultant with interpretation of third-party consultant reports and upload records into the hazmat database
- Respond to Business Area inquiries regarding hazmat concerns in collaboration with the Hazardous Materials Consultant
- Review sample reports, provide interpretation and conduct on-site meetings regarding hazmat concerns in collaboration with supervisor
- Support Occupational Hygiene Consultants and Occupational Health Nurses with development of Safety Toolbox talks or Safe Work Procedures that will be shared with Business Areas
- Other related duties as required

**Note**: This position may be a combination of working from a City of Edmonton office and on-site working conditions.

**Qualifications**:

- Currently enrolled in an occupational health and safety or related co-op or equivalent post-secondary work experience diploma or degree program
- Working knowledge of the Alberta Occupational Health and Safety Act, Regulation and Code
- General knowledge of hazardous building materials (asbestos, mould, lead, Polychlorinated biphenyls, ozone depleting substances, mercury) and their associated hazards. Specific hazmat training (i.e asbestos 2-day certification) is considered an asset
- Strong organizational skills with strong attention to detail
- Effective interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills and the ability to establish and maintain strong working relationships
- Demonstrated ability to conduct research, interpret and synthesize information, and present to an audience
- Ability to work independently and in a team
- Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's license (or provincial equivalent). Must arrange own transportation to be reimbursed in accordance with City of Edmonton policy. This may require business auto insurance
