**LAND BASED COORDINATOR**

**SUMMARY**:
As Pelican High Peak’s Land Based Coordinator, your primary responsibility will be to cultivate a culture of mental, emotional, spiritual, and physical wellness and resilience among the youth between the ages of 12 and 17 in attendance at the healing lodge. You will achieve this by working closely with the youth who attend the healing lodge while facilitating land-based and wellness activities. In this role, you will accompany youth along with Elders, Cultural Workers, Wellness Workers, and other team members on outings, serving as a chaperone while providing guidance and support. Your extensive knowledge of land-based activities will enable you to teach the youth skills that will enhance their overall mental wellness, building their confidence and resilience. At times, students may experience triggers during events or outings, and as the Land Based Coordinator, you will also provide mental health support to these youth. Through your leadership, expertise, and support, you will inspire and promote the development of a community of healthy, resilient, and empowered young people. Additionally, you will collaborate with other organizations to create joint land-based programming, strengthening partnerships and increasing opportunities for youth.

**DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES**:

- Develop curriculum and or programming that is based on a cultural land-based program, and connections to the land;
- Promote First Nations' identities and cultures through land-based practices, protocols, and the relationship to their identities and ways of life;
- Foster appreciation of youth identity through knowledge and pride of who they are;
- Provide comprehensive, culturally appropriate, and person-centered services and programs to youth;
- Prepare safety plans, including emergency extraction, for outdoor activities as outlined in land-based policies and procedures;
- Lead land-based activities and teach skills to youth and employees such as fishing, harvesting animals, berry picking, fasting, etc. depending on season;
- Ensure appropriate material, equipment and staffing are provided based on event;
- Provide a monthly schedule with planned events to programs and include list of materials needed;
- Teach youth and staff proper protocols regarding ceremonies, procedures of approaching Elders for guidance or knowledge, and ensure all staff and youth follow protocols within ceremony;
- Identify youth’s individualized goals and document progress towards their goals;
- Prepare workshops and presentations promoting land-based, mental wellness, cultural, and health and safety concepts for youth and employees;
- Monitor and upkeep supply of resources to ensure adequate instructional resources are available;
- Assist Pelican High Peak to identify areas of partnership with potential instructors, organizations and businesses that will support the land based and wellness programming for Pelican High Peak;
- Attend and participate in professional development activities such as workshops, seminars, and in-service training to further education, skills, and training;
- Perform other duties as assigned.

**ACCOUNTABILITY**:
The Land Based Coordinator is under the day-to-day Supervision of the Treatment Services Manager with further accountability to the Chief Executive Officer for overall performance.

**QUALIFICATIONS**:

- Exceptional knowledge of First Nations culture, protocol, and experience working with Elders is essential.
- Extensive knowledge of land-based activities is essential.
- Strong knowledge and awareness of First Nation’s culture and history, with particular emphasis on family violence, child welfare, the impacts of trauma, intergenerational trauma, First Nations youth engagement and community outreach.
- Ability to speak a NAN language is an asset.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Must possess a valid Ontario Driver’s License and be willing to travel if required.
- Must provide a clear criminal reference check (PVSC), which includes screening for vulnerable sector.
- Must have a flexible schedule and be available to work some evenings and weekends.

Education and Experience
- Post-secondary education in Indigenous studies, social work, health studies, child and youth work
- or combination of education and work experience
- Minimum of three years of work experience within a First Nations organization or community
- Skills and experience in presenting workshops and facilitating groups.
- Experience in organizing functions, events, and land-based outings is required.
- Experience working with First Nations children, youth and families is essential.
- Experience in program planning, development, and implementation.
