Applications are invited for the position of District Signing Interpreter, with the locations to be assigned based on student and school needs, for a minimum of 25 hours per week, while school is in session.

**Required Qualifications**:

- Preference given to an equivalency to the Vancouver Community College program in American Sign Language (ASL) Preference is given to graduates or equivalency to the Douglas College program
- Demonstrated fluency in American Sign Language
- Knowledge of Deaf culture and community resources
- Experience working and/or interacting with Deaf or Hard of Hearing people, especially children
- Understanding of the language implications in the education of Deaf and Hard of Hearing students
- Ability to adjust the signing, education and communication levels required, in accordance with students needs
- Ability to support student(s) in the implementation of his/her IEP
- Ability to understand and work with curriculum at the appropriate grade level(s)
- Ability to be flexible in order to meet the varying academic, social, emotional and behavioural needs of students
- Knowledge of the basic aspects of student’s physical, educational, social and emotional development
- Excellent communications skills;
- Demonstrated ability and knowledge of strategies to work successfully with deaf and hard of hearing students and also students with mental and/or physical challenges, learning disabilities and behaviour disorders;
- Ability to work harmoniously as a member of an inter-disciplinary team of professionals and para-professionals; and
- Computer literacy and experience with technological assists, such as cochlear implants, hearing aids, and FM systems.

Signing Interpreters work in a variety of settings under the direction of a Certified Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. In addition to signing and communication duties, responsibilities may include any of the following:
**Duties will include but are not necessarily limited to**:
1. Interpreting speech signal to a visual language as required throughout the day.
2. Implementation of a student’s individual educational plan;
3. Implementation of behavioural management plans;
4. The social, vocational, and academic training of individuals or groups;
5. Materials preparation;
6. Transportation of students to various program activities; and
7. Protecting and respecting the confidentiality of information.

The successful applicant may be required to demonstrate that he/she is capable of performing the physical requirements of the position and to certify that she/he has no known pre-existing medical conditions, which would prevent him/her from performing his/her duties.

The rate of pay for this position is in accordance with the current Collective Agreement with the Canadian Union of Public Employees, Local 723.
