**The Opportunity**:
This position is primarily responsible for providing technical support and guidance to inspection staff, general public, consultants and other agencies for all new and existing construction.

**Accountabilities**:

- Provide technical expertise, guidance, and interpretation on building, fire, and construction codes/standards and City by-laws to staff, general public, consultants, contractors, and other outside agencies to ensure safety of all new and existing building construction from a fire, life safety, structural, health, and accident perspective.
- Analyze alternate solutions/code equivalencies for building, plumbing, mechanical and electrical disciplines to ensure objective based solutions and functions are met.
- Perform assessments, evaluations and research on engineered designs, products, processes, systems, techniques and proposals from professional engineers, architects, consultants, developers, builders, contractors, manufacturers/suppliers, lawyers, tenants and the general public.
- Assist in the development and implementation of new programs and initiatives with respect to building, fire and energy codes and make recommendations for revisions to existing policies, procedures, regulations, and by-laws.
- Assist in the development of Safe Work Practices for inspection staff and conduct field inspection and training/site consultation on a regular basis.
- Represent the City to the St. John's Local Board of Appeal and in provincial court cases as required and build partnerships with outside groups and agencies to assist in the delivery of goals and objectives of the division.

**Qualifications**:
Bachelor of Technology or degree in related field from a recognized educational institution. Must be eligible for membership in Society of Fire Protection Engineers and the Association of Engineering Technicians and Technologists of NL (AETTNL). Six (6) years’ of progressively responsible experience in the field of building inspection and fire code development and enforcement. Excellent knowledge of construction industry standards, techniques & methods and a solid understanding of fire department operations is required in addition to thorough knowledge and understanding of Canadian and American building and fire codes and systems, including provincial regulations, Canada's National Codes, and National Fire Protection Association Publications. Must have strong and effective analytical, problem solving, decision making, research, investigation skills and strong attention to detail to effectively analyze and interpret codes, standards and by-laws. An equivalent combination of education and experience acceptable to the City of St. John’s may also be considered.
