POSITION OVERVIEW
- This is a temporary position until June 2025.

Are you passionate about research and economic dissemination? Can you make numbers and data talk and create a narrative with them? If yes, we have a temporary position open at the moment.

The Economist will be responsible for developing and carrying out various research projects on small
- and medium-sized businesses and entrepreneurship. This includes developing a work plan, timeline, methodology, as well as using survey data and statistics to develop compelling narratives and write high-quality research reports for diverse audiences (e.g., entrepreneurs, journalists, bank executives).

CHALLENGES TO BE MET

Here are some of the challenges in a typical week:
- Develop research reports on a variety of economic and entrepreneurial topics.- Prepare briefing notes for senior management on various economic issues such as economic competitiveness, industry profiles, public policies and economic prospects.- Work proactively with other BDC teams to understand their needs and how the economic research group can support them.- Participate in the communication of research results to BDC management and the general public, including interest groups, government officials and other collaborating organizations.- Provide advice to senior management on business issues facing small business owners.- Contribute to other work such as sector reports, briefing notes, and presentations to the management committee and board of directors.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

If you can answer YES to the following questions, you may be the person we are looking for:
- Do you have a Master’s degree in Economics or in another appropriate field?- Do you have at least five years of experience in microeconomic research or in writing economic research reports for a variety of audiences?- Do you have a keen interest in communication or experience in economic dissemination?- Do you have strong analytical and conceptual thinking skills and in-depth knowledge of Canadian sectors and industries, including knowledge of Canadian databases such as CANSIM?- Do you have experience in preparing memos and PowerPoint presentations?- Can you identify research questions based on unclear or imprecise requests?- Are you familiar with microeconomic research methods and have experience with survey data interpretation?- Are you comfortable using programming languages (R, SPSS, Beyond 2020, etc.) and Microsoft Office Suite?- Are you comfortable in English and French, both written and spoken?
