**Supervisor**: Director of Programs

**Hours of Work**: Monday through Friday, 8:30 - 4:30 with a rotation of some evenings and weekends

**Job Summary**:
As a member of the Education Team, the Summer Day Camp Director provides leadership and guidance to the summer camp team of Section Coordinators, Head Counselors and volunteers, ensuring a safe, memorable and educational camp experience for children ages 4-13.

**Principal Tasks**:
**Pre Camp**
- Determine staffing requirements for upcoming season in cooperation with the HR Manager
- Review resumes and conduct interviews for Section Coordinators in cooperation with the HR Manager (March - April)
- Become familiar with the online registration system (CampBrain) -registration, reports, sign in sheets, etc.
- Work with Volunteer Manager to interview and schedule volunteer counselors.
- Field camp related questions from parents/guardians regarding camper registration, programming, in a professional, timely and courteous manner
- Outsource and schedule programming such as orienteering, special presenters, where no internal expertise is available
- Prepare for arrival of Section Coordinators in early June by setting up adequate resources and necessary equipment such as workspace, computers, etc. to facilitate efficient program development
- Check on camp equipment readiness such as archery, PFD’s, etc. as well as readiness of sites i.e. beaches at Outdoor Adventure Site and SRFS, firewood, bike racks, mountain bikes, bathrooms, crates to store camper clothes, etc.
- Book space needs re: training, etc. with bookings coordinator
- Provide site orientation and schedule school program observations to assist new Section Coordinators in understanding FortWhyte’s existing resources and program material
- Guide and supervise Section Coordinators in program development. Review programs, schedules and make adaptations and enhancements as necessary.
- Analyze and anticipate space and/or equipment conflict with other programs and FortWhyte Staff with guidance from Education Coordinator
- Plan and coordinate volunteer training as a team with Education Team and Section Coordinators
- Update Section Coordinator Manual in cooperation with the Education Team

**During Camp**
- Provide Section Coordinators with their weekly camper reports and review any camper issues/concerns (i.e: allergies, behavior problems, etc.)
- Provide on-going support and advice to Section Coordinators by visiting each section on a daily basis
- Work closely with Section Coordinators to support them in troubleshooting any issues with the program, Counsellor attendance and performance, parental concerns, safety issues, etc.
- Communicate directly with parents as needed to ensure satisfaction with camp programming. Work to solve concerns and complaints.
- Ensure Section Coordinators submit ongoing paperwork (volunteer evaluations, completed parental evaluations)
- Connect with Manager of Volunteer Services on any on-going issues regarding Counselor performance, attitude, etc. to work out solutions together
- In-fill Volunteer Counselors as needed when Manager of Volunteer Services is on holidays
- Coordinate weekly hot dog lunches
- Coordinate weekly Counselor get-togethers on Fridays at the Outdoor Adventure Site in cooperation Section Coordinators
- Assist in organizing end-of-summer Counselor party in cooperation with Section Coordinators

**After Camp**
- Ensure all Section Coordinators provide a summary of their camp experience specific to their section.
- Supervise and participate in the clean-up of camp: return all supplies to their proper location, inventory of life jackets, store bikes for winter, report any lost or broken materials to the Education Coordinator.
- Provide a camp summary to the Director of Education.
- Other duties as assigned

**Basic Hiring Criteria**:

- University/college student working towards a degree/diploma in education, recreation, tourism or other related outdoor field
- Extensive camp experience in a leadership role
- Proven experience working with children (a child abuse registry and criminal record checks are required before position begins)
- Knowledge of Manitoba social and natural history an asset
- Enthusiastic commitment to FortWhyte Alive’s mission and mandate
- Certification in First Aid and CPR an asset
- Private transportation to FWA (no bus service available)
