**Purpose**:
Reporting to the Director, Data Strategy and Governance (Director), the Data Governance Analyst is responsible for metadata creation, enhancement, and management, and helping to shape metadata practices and processes for York University.

Examples of metadata include:
Business glossary definitions
Technical definitions
Data quality rules
Data classifications
Data lineage
Specifications

Metadata is key to operationalizing York University's data governance vision, mission, and goals, and will significantly impact data literacy for students, staff, and faculty. York University currently uses the Data Cookbook as its metadata tool. York University's Data Cookbook instance currently includes 600+ draft business glossary definitions, 30+ technical definitions, and 2300+ specifications.

Metadata Management

General

**Education**:
Bachelor's degree required. A wide variety of degrees will be considered, such as bachelor's degrees in Communications, English, Journalism, Library Studies, Business, Information Technology, and Computer Science.
Data governance or data management certifications (e.g., CDMP) are considered beneficial.

**Experience**:
2 years of experience in metadata management and understanding of how data is used by businesses strongly preferred.
Previous writing and proofreading experience required.
Operational familiarity with the Data Cookbook or similar metadata management tools preferred.
A strong background in large-scale, shared data environments is beneficial.
Experience working in the post-Secondary sector/institution preferred, including familiarity with a university environment, and experience working with stakeholders at various levels within a university environment.
Experience collaborating with IT is considered an asset.
Familiarity with analytics and dashboarding tools (e.g., Power BI, Tableau) is considered an asset.
Balanced business/technical background: Sufficient level of technical background to provide highly credible leadership to Data Trustees, Data Stewards, and Data Custodians.

- Ability to understand complex concepts and processes and translate them effectively through superior communication skills (e.g., oral and written) to a variety of audiences.
- Demonstrated ability to maintain consistent accuracy and attention to detail while maintaining a very high level of productivity.
- Strong commitment to the ethical use of data.

Knowledge
- Familiarity with data governance and/or data management best practices (e.g., DAMA, EDM) preferred.
- Good understanding of metadata (including structures, processes, and practices) ideally within the higher education sector preferred.
- Knowledge of the university environment, including stakeholders and their data requirements preferred.
- Familiarity with and knowledge of data environments preferred.
- Familiarity with and knowledge of Ontario data privacy laws preferred.

**Additional Notes**:

- Works in an open office environment. Is required to attend meetings across campuses.
- **Compensation**:
York's CPM Compensation Framework has a salary grid consisting of 6 or 8 steps (depending on job grade) which is reviewed annually with possible adjustments, and a lump sum Performance Based Recognition Award.
