In accordance with the Mission, Vision and Values, and strategic directions of Provincial Health Services Authority patient safety is a priority and a responsibility shared by everyone at PHSA, and as such, the requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position. Reporting to the Director, Ethics Services, the Ethicist is responsible for facilitating and supporting the functions of a comprehensive clinical ethics program for PHSA. Responsibilities include ethics consultation and support; assistance in the development and review of organizational policies; and guidance in ethical decision-making on clinical, research and organizational ethics issues. The Ethicist builds organizational capacity for sound ethical decisions-making through educational initiatives by engaging physicians, trainees and staff in appropriate forums and through participation on internal and external committees and task groups
**What you’ll do**
- Promotes awareness by PHSA staff, physicians, trainees, patients/clients and their families regarding accessibility of clinical and organization ethics services. Facilitates the accessibility of service ethics information through the creation of community tools such as intranet/internet based ethics resources. Provides staff support and ethics expertise to PHSA Agencies’ clinical ethics committee(s) and task groups.
- Provides consultation to patients and their families and professional staff on ethical, legal and policy issues and concerns stemming from clinical interactions between health care professionals and patients.
- Provides expertise to the agency on moral frameworks, analysis, decision-making and resolution, and educational and case review activities.
- Supports policy development and analysis activities, including the review of organization policies affecting patients, clients and families and caregivers.
- Conducts independent research and writing in the field of ethics. Provides guidance and assistance to health care professionals who wish to include an ethics component in their research and writing.
- Plans, coordinates and delivers training and education programs and initiatives including care-based and ethics teaching rounds presentations about ethical principles. Assists in coordinating and integrating ethics education with other educational initiatives within PHSA. Mentors trainees and staff learners in ethics.
- Identifies new developments and trends in the area of clinical and organization ethics through literature review, contact with peers at other organizations professional association and attendance at seminars, workshops and education programs. Communicates information and makes recommendations to the Ethics Lead for evaluation and approval. Facilities the implementation of approved initiatives and monitors and takes remedial action as required.
- Represents the Clinical Ethics Service on various internal and external working groups including national and provincial committees. Partners with the agencies of the PHSA to ensure multi-disciplinary input and collaboration in the development of clinical and organizational ethics initiatives.
- Provides research ethics support, including attendance and participation on relevant research ethics committees.
**What you bring**
**Qualifications**:
- A level of education, training, and experience equivalent to a Ph.D. in Philosophy, Ethics or other related discipline plus two (2) years recent related experience in a clinical setting including previous research and writing in the area of clinical ethics.
