**Location - **North campus. This role is hybrid with a mix of remote and in person

**Position summary**

The Core Network Specialist - Wireless has responsibility for the design, operation and maintenance of the campus-wide University wireless network infrastructure. This includes architecture, design, and back-end operation of the infrastructure. This position maintains close working relationships with University neighbors such as the City of Edmonton and Alberta Health Services in the delivery of consistent services across varying organizations infrastructure.

Secondary responsibilities include supporting other members of the Network Operations team in the design, operation and maintenance of the Campus Area Network infrastructure and support of other services the team is responsible for.

The Analyst is regarded as a more senior member of the network support teams whose expertise is important to all areas of the campus network infrastructure operation. The analyst must be capable of exercising sound judgment in the management of a complex and highly visible wireless network infrastructure relied on by much of the University community. This person participates in the team on-call rotation and is expected to respond immediately on a 24-hour basis while they are on-call.

**Duties**

**Wireless Network Design/Operation/Support**:

- Provide design services to roll out a wireless Ethernet service across the whole campus.
- Addresses emerging issues that arise during the deployment and continuing operation of the network
- Interact with various end-user supporting groups (AICT helpdesk, LAN administrators, etc.) to investigate problems relating to the wireless network.
- Continuously investigate new technologies which may affect the operation of the wireless network or be used to expand its’ capabilities.
- Manage interaction with contractors who will implement cabling and hardware services for wireless deployment.
- Work with wireless associated services e.g. PDAs, Voice over wireless devices, RFID tag systems, network paging devices.

**Network Operation/Support**:

- Works with the other members of the Network Operations Team to ensure the availability and reliability of the backbone network of the University.
- Utilizes monitoring and reporting tools to discover evolving problems before they become an operational concern that impacts campus services.
- Configures routers, switches, and other network devices and client connections as required.

**On-Call responsibility**
- Carries the pager in the Network Operations on-call rotation the Analyst
- Utilizes familiarity with, and skills relating to all the services operated by the Team to respond quickly to any problem that emerges at any time.
- If the resolution of a problem requires the involvement of other parties, the Analyst still retains responsibility for monitoring and facilitating the resolution of the problem.

**Minimum Qualifications**
- A Bachelor of Science in computing science, engineering or equivalent experience in design and operation of large-scale wireless networks.
- Wireless networking certifications including but not limited to Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP) - Enterprise, Certified Wireless Design Processional (CWDP).
- Training and experience in large and advanced network operation and design is essential.
- An advanced understanding of Network protocols (wired and wireless) and standards
- In depth network troubleshooting techniques
- Detailed problem solving approach and abilities.
- Comfort with multiple operating systems including Windows, Linux, MacOS, iOS, Android
