Casual Library Technician

**DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES**:

- developing, organizing and maintaining a collection of diverse library materials
- locating resource information for students, teachers and parents by performing an automated library catalogue search
- delivering library services (i.e. adding copies, bar coding, spine labeling, stamping, jacketing, reinforcing, circulating, shelving, filing, repairing, weeding, tracking inter-library loan transactions, maintaining periodicals, maintaining inventory)
- providing assistance in the use of the Library Information Centre and its materials; assisting students with the development of library research skills, in co-operation with the teacher
- demonstrating proper use of resources
- supporting teachers’ instructional programs by providing resources for students through print and non-print materials (videos, pictures, etc.), and electronic (on-line catalogs, inter-library loans, multi-media, internet, etc.) resources
- reviewing records to compile a list of overdue books and sending overdue notices to the classroom teacher
- processing new materials - books, kits and non-book materials, in a timely manner
- filing various items including vertical files, picture files and study unit kits
- keeping areas tidy, labeled and attractive
- consulting with teachers and the principal to develop a list of new purchases to support curriculum needs and the interests of Catholic students
- completing purchase orders following Board protocol for the acquisition of new purchases
- informing staff and students about newly acquired resources
- providing in-service training and support for Destiny Library Manager, MediaNet, and all electronic databases
- maintaining up-to-date inventory records of educational materials, publications, supplies and equipment
- preparing displays (e.g. bulletin boards, posters, charts) to generate interest and participation in assorted educational and library related activities
- encouraging students to have an interest in reading through storytelling and book talks (elementary), film appreciation and book discussion
- participating in Board initiated professional development and organizational meetings
- completing requisitions for Audio Visual equipment and maintaining an inventory of A.V. equipment within the automated library program
- submitting completed paperwork or electronic records as per visual licensing agreements
- setting up equipment and demonstrating proper operating procedures to school personnel
- cleaning and performing routine maintenance to equipment, or sending the equipment to the Board for repairs
- laminating materials for staff and recording and collecting fees, when required
- providing drop-in book talks (secondary)
- monitoring computer usage (secondary)

**QUALIFICATIONS**:

- Library Technician Diploma from a recognized post-secondary institution or equivalent
- Three months experience with the Dewey Decimal Classification System, and cataloguing procedures according to AACR2 and SEARS Subject Headings, MARC records, standard library cataloging basics
- Computer and audio-visual equipment knowledge and experience
- Good interpersonal and artistic skills to promote library
- Knowledge of the current automation system
- Ability to work under mínimal supervision, to organize time efficiently, and to work well with a variety of people.

Part-time hours: 0-35 per week

**Salary**: $16.41 per hour

- Monday to Friday
