**HIST3090**: Europe and the Military Revolution, 1300 to 1700

This course explores the ways in which early modern European society, institutions and culture were altered by the military revolution that shaped warfare in the period 1300-1700. The course opens with an exploration of late medieval warfare before examining the gunpowder revolution and the rise of infantry. Other topics include the theoretical justifications for war, the religious wars, and the role of war in state-building among the great powers of Western Europe and the Ottoman Empire. Lectures will also address the business of war, the impact of armed conflict on civilian populations and the intellectual responses to war, notably the publication of military treatises and manuals documenting the transformation of military practice in the period and the emergence of nascent anti-war and pacifist theories among humanists, clergy and Protestant sectaries.

**Qualifications**:
The successful applicant will have a PhD in History and experience teaching early modern European history. The successful applicant should also have experience with online pedagogy.
