**PURPOSE OF POSITION**

Under the supervision of the Corporate Communications Manager, the Corporate Communications Specialist is responsible for providing support to the functional areas of Corporate Communications for the Service. The Corporate Communications Specialist is responsible for increasing the capacity and modernization of our current media delivery platform with the goal of enhancing our technical capacity, professionalism, accountability, and transparency within our community using video and multi-media production services. The specialist will promote the internal and external communications efforts of the Brantford Police Service and also assist in the development of a variety of reports, programs, and campaigns in addition to other duties as assigned.

**SUMMARY OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES**
- Provide assistance in the development, implementation, and evaluation of communication and public relations strategies, social media campaigns, and communication plans designed to inform members, the media, and the general public of organizational initiatives and policies.
- Assist the Corporate Communications Manager with research in order to prepare quality and timely communications and marketing materials including, but not limited to, publications, advertisements, news releases, displays, audio-visual presentations, speeches, web content, briefing notes, background articles and other materials as required
- Create communication materials using graphic design software and video editing software
- Monitor media and communication initiatives on an ongoing basis, in addition to regional, provincial, and national publications and social media for policing issues and trends
- Assist with coordination of responses to media inquiries and assist employees as required to develop key messages and responses to interviews. Write, edit and/or approve the accuracy of public information including print publication, website, and other media
- Assist with the maintenance and refresh of the BPS external website
- Organize formal news conferences, special events, and projects as needed
- Promote the positive image of the police service and ensure consistent branding of internal and external initiatives through all communications efforts. Act as spokesperson when needed to project a positive, professional image for the service
- Assist with internal communications to ensure consistent messaging throughout the organization to support change and modernization initiatives
- Liaise with the Equity, Diversity & Inclusion Specialist to identify and implement messaging that will be received by diverse cultural groups in the city and surrounding area
- Develop and maintain effective networks and relationships with contacts in the media and with colleagues in other police agencies
- Provide daily support, backup, and occasional relief for the Corporate Communications Manager
- Be accountable to supervisors for the duties described

**Knowledge**
- Post-secondary education in public relations, communications, journalism, or related field.
- Demonstrated understanding of strategic communications planning
- Experience with online and traditional media, advertising, market research, and community relations
- Demonstrated knowledge and thorough understanding of communicating with respect to equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) best practices in order to effectively connect with diverse communities
- Demonstrated knowledge and thorough understanding of the historical and unique relationship between Brantford, the Six Nations of the Grand River, and Mississauga’s of the Credit
- Superior leadership and team building skills with the ability to drive effective results, using excellent judgment, discretion, decision making, while adhering to strict confidentiality requirements
- Knowledge of municipal governance and community groups an asset
- Sound understanding of all levels of relevant legislation, standards, and best practices in relation to police communications

**Skills**
- A communications professional with proven corporate and/or government communications experience
- Experience must include issues management experience in the public sector and experience with digital/social media campaigns
