**Working for the Alberta Biodiversity Monitoring Institute**

The Alberta Biodiversity Monitoring Institute (ABMI) detects large changes in biodiversity in Alberta with the annually updated Biodiversity Intactness Index and Human Footprint Inventory. This research provides ongoing, relevant, scientifically credible information on Alberta's living resources to meet the information needs of government planners, industrial developers and local communities.

**Position**

The Biodiversity Modelling Ecologist works in the ABMI’s Science Centre and is responsible for analyzing large, complex datasets to support land-use planning and management decision-making throughout Alberta. This involves leading the development of biodiversity indicators in collaboration with diverse stakeholders including the Government of Alberta, resource industry groups, Indigenous communities, and the larger environmental science and academic community.

**Duties**
- Development of biodiversity indicators to track the impacts of human development on ecosystems.
- Statistical analysis of relationships between species occurrence / abundance and human development factors such as vegetation clearing.
- Engage in reproducible research practices (i.e., GitHub) to facilitate open access and use of ABMI data and data products.
- Supporting the creation and dissemination of reports and other information products led by the ABMI Information Centre.
- Developing and reporting quality control procedures for ABMI data, analyses and modeling.

**Minimum Qualifications**
- MSc in ecology or a related natural resource management field.
- Greater than 3 years working in the field of resource management.
- Knowledge and experience in empirical statistical modelling with environmental data.
- Experience developing biodiversity indicators.
- Experience collaborating with Alberta-based stakeholders (e.g., land-use planners, industry managers, Indigenous communities).
- Excellent interpersonal skills, experience working in multidisciplinary research teams, and strong demonstrated analytical ability.

**Preferred Qualifications**
- PhD in terrestrial ecology or related discipline.
- Advanced programming skills in R and knowledge of GitHub.
- Experience with geographic information systems (GIS) and geospatial analyses.
- Experience with large data sets and a broad diversity of terrestrial taxa.
- Experience working on and leading multidisciplinary teams.
