Transitional Housing Support Worker

**HOURS OF WORK**: 37.5 Per Week (Monday to Friday with some weekends and evenings required)
**Note: This contract role will start effective November 1, 2024 ending March 31, 2025 (strong possibility for further extension of contract)**

**PURPOSE OF THE POSITION**:
The purpose of this position is to increase the safety of women, persons who identify as women and their dependents, to maximize their capacity to live violence free. The THSP worker acts as a resource to clients, ex-residents/community members and colleagues, to provide meaningful and relevant services, to the client group, collaborating with women and their dependents to develop and implement effective support strategies for their lives. Grounded in the principles of person-centred, trauma informed, self-determination and choice; the THSP Worker will assist and advocate for women and their dependents in matters not limited to their health safety and well-being, healing from violence and the effects of witnessing violence, access to affordable housing and strengthen and maintain safe housing, and additional supports as needed to live violence free.
**RESPONSIBILITIES**:
**1.** **Client / Resident Support**:
- Completes intakes, assessments, risk assessments
- Provide the necessary community supports through direct service, referrals and or advocacy in the following areas:
- Housing
- Short and long-term counselling
- Parenting support
- Educational upgrades and Job training
- Application for income support
- Health and wellness services
- Peer supports
- Cultural interpretation
- Individual planning and Goal setting
- Increase cooperation between VAW and AHT.
- Work with local Housing and Co-ordinated Access Centres to move survivors of violence and human trafficking more efficiently into affordable housing options.
**Legal Counselling**:
- Applies current knowledge, and demonstrates skill in the area of immigration, criminal and family Law
- Conducts assessments and identifies clients’ immigration, criminal and or family legal needs
- Provides information and referrals to legal aid, lawyers and other relevant legal services
- Negotiates goal plans with residents that addresses legal issues
- Demonstrates and maintains knowledge of relevant legislation regarding immigration, criminal and family law
**2.** **Violence Against Women Counselling**:
- Works with women individually and/or in groups to establish a plan that will facilitate a safe and effective path to independence
- Provides crisis intervention, informal counselling, and referrals to callers
- Provides crisis intervention, informal counselling for women and their children in the shelter
- Demonstrates and maintain knowledge of relevant issues
**3.** **Mental Health/Addictions Counselling**:
- Applies knowledge, stays current and demonstrates skill in the area of mental health and addictions
- Conducts assessments and identifies residents’ mental health/addictions issues
- Provides information and referrals to detox centers, treatment programs, supportive recovery programs, and other relevant mental health /addictions services
- Negotiates treatment plans with residents that focus on harm reduction
- Demonstrates and maintains knowledge of relevant legislation regarding addictions/mental health
**4.** **Group Work**:
- Facilitates groups and workshops consistent with the goals of the THSP program
- Collaborates with community partners in implementing programs
**5.** **Team Work**:
- Engages with the staff team in reflective practice to ensure the development and implementation of quality programs and services
- Contributes specialized knowledge and expertise to team members to develop meaningful and relevant services for women and children
- Actively participates in creating a collaborative and dynamic team environment
**6.** **Administration**:
- Adheres to all policies and procedures of Homeward Family Shelter
- Completes administrative duties as outlined in Homeward Family Shelter policies and procedures manuals and specific to your job description
- Maintains records, compiles program statistics and prepares reports and correspondence as required
- Participates in ongoing program evaluation
- Ensures that clients and ex-residents/community members are aware of their rights and responsibilities, housepractices and procedures
- Attends community coalition meetings and speaking engagements as required
- Plans programming expenditure within budget allocation
- Supervises students and volunteers, as required
**7.** **General**:
- Assists with orientation/training of relief staff, students and volunteers
- Participates in supervisory meetings
- Any other duties as required that facilitate the effective service delivery of Homeward Family Shelter
