Industrial Sewing Machine Operator Job Description

Industrial Sewing Machine Operator
Reports To
Keith Durnford, Plant Manger
Job Duties
Fitting & Assembly
¨ Assemble, fit & install pre-fabricated parts to form subassemblies or finish products using hand and power tools (ex. drill presses), following instructions from work orders and/or drawings made available
¨ Position, align and adjust parts for proper fit & assembly and connect with other hardware as directed (tubes, wires, etc.)
¨ Fasten parts together using bolts, riveting equipment and other fastening techniques (including gluing)
¨ At times, use hand-held grinders to remove sharp edges/burrs left over from previous operations.
¨ Application of labels or logos (silk-screen process) as needed
B. Inspection & Quality Control
¨ Verify that subassemblies and finish products meet proper quality standards
¨ Check components for proper alignment and functioning
C. Product Repair
¨ As required, disassemble equipment and replace worn or damaged parts and re-assemble.
D. Material Handling & Packaging
¨ Operate transportation devices/assists/equipment (roller conveyors, hand trucks, forklift trucks)
¨ Package/crate finished goods or subassemblies into appropriate containers (assemble boxes as necessary) and label appropriately
¨ At times, may have to create shipping container for custom-product from existing cartons (by modification) or building a skid.
¨ Deliver finished product to storage/shipping area by hand or using transport assists
E. Foam Cutting & Assembly
¨ Prepare Trocellen foam for cutting operation (back-rolling)
¨ Use bandsaw or foam cutter to cut Polyurethane and polyethylene foam used for mat/shape production to drawing and move to staging location as required.
¨ Lay out and glue pit modules to drawing
¨ Glue assorted foam types to create foam modules or shapes to prepare for stuffing or subsequent sewing operation.
¨ Complete work orders to record material usage and finished product
¨ Wrap pit (foam) modules in plastic and close with heat gun to ready product for shipment.
¨ Monitor and sort offcuts for use in other products to save cost and reduce scrap
¨ Upholstery of fiberglass vault table tops to prepare for final upholstery step
**Requirements**:
**I. Skills, Abilities & Experience**:

- Motor coordination and manual dexterity to perform assembly functions
- Vested interest in operating equipment (hand and power tools)
- Ability to read blueprints and interpret information contained therein
- Previous assembly experience, preferably in an industrial setting
- Valid fork truck license desirable
II. Physical Demands (also refer to Physical Demands Analysis Sheet)
- Ability to handle a variety of objects differing in size, shape, weight
- Ability to perform repetitive work
- Some heavy lifting (intermittent, up to 90lbs)
- Familiarity with hand-held power tools
- Ability to spend long periods of time standing
- Full mobility to move materials within plant, manually or with assists provided
