**Data Governance Coordinator - 18 Month Contract**

Fasken is undertaking a multi-year program to transform the way the firm manages and accesses legal knowledge. The program consists of a number of projects which will change working practices, governance practices and provide solutions based on lawyer needs, all supported by best of breed legal technology platforms.

The Data governance Coordinator will work closely with stakeholders from business units throughout Fasken, the Data Team, IT partners and relevant third parties to drive and support the data governance implementation including cross functional collaboration and improve data quality within core systems and business processes. This will include conducting data management assessments and identifying pain points and gaps for capabilities including data quality, data privacy, data integrity, data retention, compliance with regulations and other data policies and contribute to building the future state of both data governance strategy and it’s roadmap. This will also cover the responsibility to execute the identified data governance initiatives ensuring that the right processes and roles/responsibilities are defined and enforced.

The Data Governance Coordinator will be a member of the cross functional Data Team and will be responsible for engaging with them, systems owners and business users to ensure that data quality requirements are defined, documented and translated into effective and consistent processes that improve the quality of data.

**Primary Responsibilities**
- Document the data discovery process to identify key data domains that support business objectives
- Document, manage and maintain business and technical metadata repositories (data dictionary, data catalog, business glossary), document existing data classification processes (identification of sensitive data) and data issues in processes for associated projects
- Understand how data flows internally through collaboration with data owners to support data governance
- Develop and maintain key data governance documentation, user guides, and other necessary training documents and support the implementation and maintenance of data policies and procedures
- Contribute to the development of the data governance policy, strategy and processes for the firm
- Maintain the Data Governance Framework and work with various business groups to coordinate and document data management processes and data governance policies to ensure compliance with industry regulations and standards

**Required Knowledge and Experience**
- University education, or equivalent post-secondary
- Verbal and written proficiency in English is required
- Ability to present complex information in a simple and concise manner
- Proficiency in documenting processes
- Experience with Visio is an asset to graphically document processes
- Law firm/Professional Services background, an asset
- Experience with data management and data governance highly desired
- A good understanding of information management practices including information lifecycle management, data modelling, master data management and carrying out business audits and requirements gathering
- Knowledge of data governance principles and practices
- Knowledge of data privacy regulations such as PIPEDA, GDPR, POPIA and HIPAA
- Strong ability to extract information by questioning, active listening and interviewing
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills - able to liaise with staff at all levels
- Excellent writing skills, with the ability to create clear requirements, specifications and documentation
- Ability to think strategically and identify data risks and issues
- Bilingualism (English and French) would be considered an asset
