We have an temporary opportunity available for an experienced cook, with experience preparing meals for clients and employees in a small residential treatment facility. This is a temporary position to fill in for a permanent employee away on personal leave.

McDougall House is a second stage residential treatment facility for women in recovery from addiction. Our gender-specific program provides knowledge, awareness and the opportunity for change. Our aim is to assist our clients in understanding the dynamics behind their addiction. Each individual recovery plan is focused on the goals of the client.

**Overview**
Nutrition is an essential component of mental and physical health and an important element in McDougall House operations. The role of the Relief Cook is to prepare menu plans as required, prepare lunches, snacks and dinners at McDougall House on the days she on duty. This involves following the planned menu, placing food orders within budget limits and managing the inventory. Meals are prepared for 5 to 15 people depending the meal and the day.

The relief Cook will also prepare and freeze lunches and dinners for days not covered by kitchen staff. Detailed instructions are to be provided for the employees who will serve the meals.

Duties are to be performed in accordance with our Risk Management, and Quality Management and Improvement Plans. This includes familiarity with all emergency procedures as they pertain to both the clients and the facility.

**General**
- Answer the front door during shifts.
- Observe and report to the Health and Safety Committee, and/or management, any health or safety hazards as well as any mechanical, structural, or electrical concerns or situations.
- Report to a counsellor or the Executive Director any unusual situations or client behaviour.
- Engage in positive and supportive interactions with co-workers and clients.

**Food Preparation**
- Create and follow 4-week menu cycle
- Place orders for foods and household supplies within budget limits.
- Prepare lunch, snacks and dinner for clients and staff on shift.
- Familiarity with common dietary restrictions
- Receive orders and verify amounts on packing sheets.

**Kitchen Maintenance**
- Daily monitoring & recording of cooler and freezer temperature.
- Maintain pantry, storage room, fridges and freezers in organized and clean manner.
- Maintain “Clean as you go” procedures.
- Rotate food inventory according to first in, first out format.
- Maintain WHMIS / GIS documents in the kitchen for all chemicals and sanitizing solutions

**Employment requirements**
- Food Safety Handling Certificate would be considered an asset
- 2 years of experience preparing food in residential facility
- Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) training
- Independent worker, capable of taking initiative and making independent decisions while following guidelines
- Knowledge of addictions, gender specific issues as they pertain to women as well as knowledge of Twelve Step programs and their significance for women in recovery.
- Understand the importance of Professional and Personal boundaries.
- A supportive listener, empathic and non-judgmental.
- An open and friendly personality
- Vulnerable Sector Police Information Check
- Valid First Aid and CPR Certificate

**Job Type**: Casual
