Our amazing Art Handler is moving into a full-time position with our organization, so we’re looking for someone new to join our team The Facilities Maintenance & Art Handler cares for artwork on its journey with our gallery, working closely with Sales Team and reporting to the Gallery Manager.

We’re a small tight-knit team, working together to meet and build upon the visions of our founders, members of The Group of Seven who established our organization in 1941. The Federation’s purpose is to provide services to emerging and professional artists as they forge their way and hone their practice. We do this through the provision of exhibition, education and networking opportunities.

The Facilities Maintenance & Art Handler person is an integral part of helping us provide our services. Their main responsibilities include the safe receiving and handling of fragile artwork, as well as supporting the team with keeping the artwork organized.

Administrative tasks, such as maintaining inventory records and condition reports, as well as processing payments for shipments are also be a part of your responsibilities. The Facilities Maintenance & Art Handler person provides return delivery services to artists once exhibitions have ended, or to clients once artworks have sold. You will work closely with the Gallery Manager to ensure artworks have arrived on time for exhibitions.

Applicants must be available to work weekends as in this role, this person also provides temporary front of house relief for our Gallery Attendant during busy weekends in the gallery, greeting visitors at the front desk and providing access to our Studio artists looking to get into their studios

The person in this role is also responsible for uninstalling exhibitions on Sunday evenings, ready for the install team to come in on Monday mornings.

Facilities Maintenance tasks in this role include general repair and aesthetic maintenance of our gallery, office, studio and classroom venues, which are all located on Granville Island into two adjacent buildings.

You can expect to be involved with annual painting, wall cleaning, spot painting and hole patching after exhibition rotations, changing light bulbs, keeping inventory of gallery, studio and classroom supplies and helping to place orders to replenish these items.

Core Responsibilities:

- Gallery, office, classroom and studio maintenance and repairs
- Installing and maintaining light fixtures and gallery displays
- Bi-Annual painting of the gallery
- Inventory management
- Carefully unpacking received artwork and making note of how it was packed to return artwork in the same way as it was received from delivering artists
- Handling artwork and storing it carefully to avoid damage and make for easy retrieval
- Informing the Gallery Manager of late or missing deliveries
- Preparing artwork for display - this might include small repairs, framing, mounting, wiring and labelling objects
- Recording the condition in which artwork is received in, generating condition reports and flagging and photographing any damage
- Informing artists of damage by sending detailed photographs and working with the artist and Gallery Manager to either repair or return the artwork
- Invoicing and collecting payments from artists for framing or repair work
- Filing artwork for expedient in-person pickup
- Securing and handling fragile items for return delivery / transportation
- Repacking artwork for return, building custom boxes as necessary
- Ensuring that artwork reaches clients or artists safely
- Replacing lightbulbs, moving plinths, recycling excess packaging

**Qualifications**:

- Previous experience as an Art Handler or an Art Technician, ideally a fine art shipping company gallery is preferred
- Previous high quality art handling skills, including furniture and large sculptures,
- You will be required to display strong fine art packing and un-installation skills
- A flexible team player, who has excellent time management capabilities, strong organizational and problem solving skills are essential
- Proficient computer and administration skills are required
- The ability to work individually, while contributing to a team environment are essential
- Framing experience and artwork restoration experience is not necessary but a considerable asset
