**About the Library**:
Housed in the Riddell Library and Learning Centre, the University Library is an integral part of the MRU experience. The services, facilities, programming and expertise available in the Library support innovative teaching, learning, and scholarship across campus.

The Library includes the Archives and Special Collections, and specialized and technology-enriched teaching and learning spaces, including information literacy classrooms, a Maker Studio, audio production rooms, and a range of visualization, simulation, and immersive spaces. The Library team consists of approximately 60 employees. **About the Role**:
The Copyright Advisor provides strategic advice, education, and operational leadership on copyright, intellectual property, and permissions for the University community. This includes designing workshops and educational materials for faculty, staff, and students and supporting scholarship initiatives such as open access and creative commons licensing. The advisor promotes awareness among employees about working effectively within copyright laws and institutional policies, collaborates with internal departments and external organizations, and coordinates permissions reporting. They play a vital role in advancing innovative and responsible uses of copyrighted content. They provide guidance on the development of University policies, procedures, and guidelines relating to copyright, advancing innovative and responsible practices in teaching, learning and research.

**Responsibilities**:
**Advise, Develop, and Educate**:

- Provide guidance on access, use, and sharing of information while supporting institution-wide copyright compliance strategies.
- Educate the University community on user rights under the Copyright Act and support library scholarship services, including open access and creative commons initiatives.
- Develop and deliver presentations and workshops on copyright related topics to members of the MRU community: students, faculty, and staff.
- Advise the Dean, University Library and other university leaders on relevant intellectual property and copyright matters
- Participate and advise as needed in initiatives, projects, and procedures across the Library and the University as they intersect with copyright, licensing, or intellectual property considerations, including including open access and alternative licensing models such as Creative Commons
- Write and edit content for the Library’s web pages on copyright matters
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge on copyright legislation, case law and other related legislative and legal matters.

**Secure Permissions for Use**:

- Seek permissions, as needed, for use of copyrighted material within MRU, including coordinating invoicing and payments as needed for permissions
- Work with vendors, publishers and collectives to negotiate licenses to use material and categories of material, as appropriate

**Strategy and Outreach**:

- Promote engagement and awareness of copyright-related matters as they intersect with academic teaching and research
- Ongoing collaboration with internal and external stakeholders, including other post-secondary institutions in Canada, in support of the work and to advance copyright education, open access initiatives, creative commons licensing, and advocate for user rights in an educational setting.
- Liaise and network with copyright specialists from post-secondary educational institutions in Alberta and across Canada

**Qualifications**:

- Bachelor’s degree is required. Information Studies education such as a Master of Library and Information Science (or equivalent) or Library Information Technology (or equivalent) diploma would be considered an asset
