Reporting to the Manager of Greenhouse Operations, the incumbent is responsible for a wide range of tasks related to greenhouse and nursery operations. The Greenhouse Technician will play a vital role in supporting academic delivery and maintaining crop health and productivity for academic and retail activities. The responsibilities include greenhouse up-keep, crop scheduling, and implementing integrated pest management (IPM) strategies.
**Responsibilities include, but are not limited to**:
- Assist in the delivery of horticulture labs by supplying and maintaining the tools, equipment and plant materials required as per instructor’s request.
- Demonstrate necessary skills and assist students with practical learning, while in class and/or students participating in work study on campus.
- Assist in food production for academic demonstration, retail sales and supply produce to the kitchens at the Niagara on the Lake campus.
- Assist in growing, scheduling, and overseeing ornamental crops for academic demonstration, retail sales and grounds operations for the DJP campus.
- Overseeing crop protection through integrated pest management (IPM).
- Operate various equipment; utility vehicles, gardening tools, mowers etc.
- Diagnose and implement remedial action for plant stress
- Communicate and escalate all issues with a plant and/or the production process to all the relevant parties as required.
- Participate in cultivation related activities such as stock plant maintenance, propagation, crop maintenance, harvesting and cycle turnover.
- Oversee retail operations under supervision of the Manager of Greenhouse Operations.
- Support retail operations by assisting customers with orders and providing knowledgeable advice.
**Qualifications**:
- 2 year diploma in Horticulture, Greenhouse or related field of study
- Minimum of 2 years experience in the horticultural industry, specifically in greenhouse retail or greenhouse production
- Exhibit initiative, responsibility, intuition, and leadership
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
- Keen attention to detail
- Excellent communication and organizational skills
- Demonstrated self-starter with the ability to work with mínimal supervision
**Preferred Qualifications**:
- Pesticide License or Ministry of the Environment Exterminators license
- First Aid and CPR certification
- Significant practical experience in horticulture/greenhouse/landscape
- Proven success working in a team environment
- Chainsaw and skid steer certificates are considered an asset
- Experience with health and safety protocols and standard operating procedures
