**About Us**:
The Correctional Services division of the Department of Justice is responsible for the administration and operation of community and custody-based programs and services for adults and young persons. Within the Correctional Services core business area there are two programs: community corrections & correctional facilities. Each of these program areas is broken down into closely related activities that have a specific impact on the program’s target group.

Community Corrections has 22 offices across the province from Yarmouth to Sydney and is responsible for the supervision of both adult and young persons serving community-based sentences. The sentences include probation, conditional sentence, custody and supervision, conditional supervision and Intensive Rehabilitative Custody and Supervision. Probation officers also supervise those released from custody on conditional releases and prepare pre-sentence investigations to assist the Courts in the sentencing process. Evidence based Program facilitation and supports to specialized courts in areas of domestic violence, mental health and wellness are also part of the role of a Probation Officer as well as Restorative Justice casework and collaboration with community justice agencies.

Four (4) adult correctional facilities and one (1) youth centre provide the safety and security of person in custody while providing programs that address dynamic criminogenic factors to assist with their successful, reintegration back into the community.

Nova Scotia Correctional Services utilizes an evidence-based approach in both Community Corrections and custodial facilities. Core Correctional Practices (CCP) is the foundational practice that drives reintegration and rehabilitation practices deployed within Correctional Services. Utilizing CCP, Correctional Services staff can effectively interact, manage behavior, and help facilitate change, within target populations.

**About Our Opportunity**:
The Chief Superintendent reports to the Director, Correctional Services. The Chief Superintendent directly manages four (4) Superintendents and provides functional oversight to a Senior Superintendent in a variety of matters. The Chief Superintendent oversees Cape Breton Correctional Facility (capacity 96), Central Nova Scotia Correctional Facility (capacity 322), Northeast Nova Scotia Correctional Facility (capacity 196), and Southwest Nova Scotia Correctional Facility (capacity 38). The combined staffing complement of the four (4) facilities is approximately 466 employees. In the absence of the Director of Correctional Services, the Chief Superintendent will act in his/her stead. The Chief Superintendent will be involved in internal reviews, investigations, and make recommendations to the Director regarding corrective action (e.g. process improvement). Other direct reports include the Provincial Adjudicator and the Criminal Intelligence Officer (CISNS).

The Chief Superintendent recommends development or revision of policy & procedures and directs the development of standard operating procedures or post orders. The incumbent may be involved in writing draft P&P before sending to Executive Director for final approval. The Chief Superintendent may also prepare implementation plans and audit facilities to confirm Policy and Procedures are being followed. The incumbent must be willing to work in a division committed to the expansion of restorative practices through the Division's operations.

The Chief Superintendent establishes comprehensive planning, and priority setting. The incumbent also strengthens operations as a result of improved compliance with P&P and SOP through regular process reviews, audits, and follow-up. The incumbent will also promote cost effective operations that do not exceed budget authority.
