Casual Wildlife Care Keeper, Black-footed Ferret

Your Toronto Zoo makes animal well-being a priority in all operations and shows respect for all wildlife.

**Basic Function**: Reporting to the Supervisor, Wildlife Health, this position will work alongside full-time keepers in the breeding and recovery programs for the endangered black-footed ferret and Vancouver Island marmot. They will assist in the care, maintenance and breeding of the ferrets and marmots including feeding, cleaning, and ensuring that the animals are kept in good health. They will participate in the collection and compilation of data to be used by the Manager and researchers in preparing husbandry and research reports. They will assist in conservation educational outreach programs and in writing reports and funding proposals, and work with other programs and species in the area. This position will also assist and provide support in implementing the Strategic Plan.

**Responsibilities**:

- Assist with the care and feeding of animals.
- Assist in breeding programs and medical procedures.
- Assist with data collection for various research initiatives.
- Conduct behavioral observations of paired animals.
- Assist with compiling and interpreting behavioral data.
- Assist with outreach educational programs.
- Assist with writing funding and grant proposals.
- Provide progress reports to Toronto Zoo staff.
- Other duties as assigned by the Supervisor or their designate.

**Qualifications**:

- University or college graduate; background in environmental science, conservation biology, or zoology.
- Previous zookeeper or animal husbandry experience including a minimum of 6-months experience working with the Black Footed Ferret and Vancouver Island Marmot breeding and recovery programs.
- Experience in interpretive/outreach programs desirable.
- Able to work in varying climate conditions.
- Ability to work overtime, shift work and weekends.
- Ability to work independently.
- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
- Experience in research and fundraising desirable.
- Computer skills; Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
- G class driver’s license preferred.
- Ability to meet the physical demands of the job.
