**Position Purpose & Overview**

In alignment with the vision, mission, values and overall strategic direction of St. John’s School, the Controller manages, oversees and administers accounting and related administrative activities, and ensures accounting controls are in place to safeguard the school’s assets. The Controller is responsible for overseeing the financial operations and accounting functions of the school. This is a key leadership role that requires strong financial acumen, attention to detail, and the ability to work collaboratively with various stakeholders. The Controller will report to the Director of Finance & Human Resources and will play a vital role in ensuring the financial health and compliance of the organization.

**Key Responsibilities**
- Financial Reporting & Budgeting:_
- Monitor budget to actual results throughout the year and provide regular updates and reports to the Director of Finance, Head of School, and Finance Committee.
- Prepare and maintain accurate monthly internal financial reporting. Ensure compliance with relevant accounting standards and regulatory requirements. Prepare and present financial reports to the Director of Finance, Head of School, and Finance Committee.
- Develop and implement financial policies, procedures, and internal controls throughout the school to ensure the accuracy and integrity of financial information.
- Assists with financial analysis and provides insights to support strategic decision-making.
- Monitors cash flows and investments in GIC’s.
- Accounting:_
- Responsible for full cycle accounting and ensure accurate and timely recording of financial transactions and maintain a complete and organized set of books and records for the SJS Society and SJS Trust
- Manage the day-to-day accounting functions, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and general ledger. Reconcile bank statements, credit card statements, and other financial accounts.
- Oversee the processing of accounts payable, ensuring timely and accurate payments to vendors. Manage accounts receivable, including invoicing, collections, and reconciliation. Ensure vendors are paid accurately on a timely basis.
- Oversee payroll processing, including accurate calculation of employee salaries, benefits, and deductions.
- Prepare and review monthly internal financial statements.
- Grant and donations management:_
- Oversee the financial reporting of Ministry grants and donations from current families
- Work closely with the Advancement team to track and reconcile donations on a monthly basis, ensuring donations are reported and spent in accordance to intended purposes.
- Assist with annual ES Audit verification of student enrolment numbers.
- Policy and Compliance:_
- GST/PST Returns: Ensure compliance with relevant tax laws, including filing GST / PST tax returns and ensuring remittances are made on time.
- Canada Revenue Agency: Responsible for the preparation of annual T2202 tax slips for eligible families and T3 trust tax slips for SJS Trust unitholders
- Payroll: Ensure compliance with payroll tax laws and reporting requirements for statutory remittances and payroll tax slips.
- Stay up to date with relevant accounting standards, tax regulations, and financial best practices.
- Develop and maintain financial policies and procedures to ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
- Team Leadership:_
- Acts in alignment with, promotes and upholds the School’s mission, vision, values and policies at all times; is a steward of the school both internally and externally
- With oversight from the Director of Finance, hires Finance staff as needed.
- Lead and manage the finance team, providing guidance, mentorship, and professional development opportunities. Provide ongoing coaching, guidance and conflict resolution as needed. Conduct regular performance evaluations and provide feedback to team members.
