Toronto, Canada Girl Guides of Canada-Guides du Canada Full time

Introduction and Context

Girl Guides of Canada (GGC) was created with faith-based concepts that provided programming for young girls and women. Many of the traditions and values of the organization correspond with that. The organization has a large volunteer following that delivers the program across the country. GGC also has approximately 200 staff who support the volunteers in delivering the mission, vision, and values. In 2010, Girl Guides of Canada decided that due to the ever-changing global landscape, the organization would become secular. This meant an immediate change from practices and traditions that were ingrained in the culture of the organization.

This change was determined by the board of directors, implemented by staff, and delivered by volunteers. The priority for the organization was building inclusion and diversifying membership. The change management process that occurred was quick. This meant that there was limited time for volunteers and staff to have a concise and uniformed approach to secularism in GGC.

In 2018, GGC decided to clarify its approaches to secularism through a lens of inclusion and diversity. This meant the creation of the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion department within the organization. The purpose of this department was to help implement strategies and help the organization further it’s renowned path.

Currently, the challenge of identifying what it means to be a secular organization has repeatedly come up from members, staff, and volunteers. We have recognized the need for clarification is pertinent to the continued work of diversity, equity, and inclusion that GGC is trying to do.

Objectives
- Define secularism for Girl Guides of Canada
- Identify and create additional resources as required
- Establish change management process for embedding secularism to

members, staff, and volunteers
- Establish parameters for secularism for long term sustainability

The Proposal
- GGC would like to work with a DEI Consultant that has a specialty in Secularism and change management. The Consultant should be able to identify gaps in policies and/or procedures, training, and programming. This will help clarify and define GGC’s stance on secularism. This will occur through a three phased approach. The consultant will be able to work closely with the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion team to ensure that they have the required information.
- At the end of the process, the consultant will produce a report to be shared with the Manager of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.
