**Overview**

The Canadian Museum for Human Rights (CMHR) is a national museum dedicated to the evolution, celebration and future of human rights. It is the first national museum in Canada to be built outside the National Capital Region. Located in the heart of Canada in Winnipeg, Manitoba, the CMHR rises from the Prairie earth at The Forks, which has been a meeting place for over six thousand years.

***Purpose of Position**

The Canadian Museum for Human Rights (CMHR) is centered around the idea that respect and understanding of human rights can serve as a positive force for change in the world. The Licensing Specialist will support our collective efforts to build a workplace culture that is inclusive, equitable, innovative, and focused on inspiring action.

Reporting to the Manager, Collections and Stewardship, the Licensing Specialist administrates, coordinates and negotiates the intellectual property licensing for the CMHR’s outputs in exhibitions, website content, social media, programming, marketing, communications and publications in compliance with relevant laws, regulations and best practices. They will be responsible for managing licensing data, routine auditing and renewal of existing licensing to ensure continued legal and ethical compliance, and coordinating permissions and access by external parties to CMHR-created assets.

The incumbent will be a strong and thoughtful communicator, critical thinker and innovator, and will bring a collaborative approach to their role.

**Key Responsibilities**
- Contributes to a culture that promotes respect, equity, inclusion and innovation, and models anti-racist and accountable behaviours.
- Administrates licensing, including researching, conducting external correspondence, reviewing, negotiating and executing all licenses and related financial processes.
- Supports CMHR image and audiovisual research processes.
- Administrates digital assets in the CMHR’s possession, including acquisition, organization, cataloguing, documentation and storage of the assets and metadata, as well as tracking rights’ expirations.
- Supports the administration and governance of the Digital Asset Management System to ensure that Museum-wide digital asset management needs are met.
- Advises relevant CMHR departments on current copyright and intellectual property matters, including applicable laws and regulations, best practices and documentation standards.
- Provides internal and external clients with access to CMHR content across multiple collections, including assets licensed by the CMHR as well as assets for which the CMHR administers copyright.
- Supports digitization of analog materials in the CMHR’s collection.

**Required Qualifications**

- University degree in a humanities, social sciences or information management field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

- Certificate in Canadian Copyright Law or equivalent education and experience.

- A minimum of 2 years’ experience working in copyright licensing at a library, archive, museum, or cultural industry setting.
- Demonstrated knowledge of the Canadian
_Copyright Act_ and other relevant national and international legislation with respect to different types of intellectual property materials and usage scenarios.
- Experience working with database management tools such as digital asset management systems, and cataloguing assets using controlled vocabularies and metadata standards.
- Commitment to human rights principles, including respect, equity, inclusion and dignity for all.
- Strong communication skills, both oral and written.

- Strong organizational skills, self-motivation and attention to detail.

- Strong research and problem-solving skills with the ability to work with complex legal documents.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively. Strong time management skills, with the ability to work under pressure and under strict deadlines.
