The McMaster Manufacturing Research Institute (MMRI) is a core research platform in engineering that is responsible for supporting a wide range of academic and industry research activity. The MMRI is equipped with a full complement of industry scale equipment designed to meet the sophisticated research and development needs of leading researchers. As such the MMRI provides a focus for high-profile research and serves as a vehicle for university-industry-government interaction.

The Institute is seeking an Operations Manager to support the day-to-day operations of the institute. The Operations Manager will work closely with the Financial Administrator under the supervision of the Director to maintain the institute’s efficient operation and growth. This position involves working with a dynamic team to deliver on and support the institute’s vision by developing and implementing a wide range of operational policies and procedures. The Operations Manager will be an important part of the MMRI team managing a team of technical experts spanning expertise in a wide range of advanced manufacturing technology while working closely with other MMRI personnel, university staff, graduate and undergraduate students and research interns.

The Operations Manager is responsible for operational management of the Institute and will ensure milestones and deliverables are met as outlined in our proposals and coordinate the development of the operational aspects of new strategic partnerships and initiatives. The Operations Manager will also be involved in planning for the institutes annual operating budget, in close collaboration with the Director and Financial Administrator they will also develop and maintain the institute’s marketing and business plans. A major component of this position involves working with the MMRI team to support the development of research proposals, prepare progress and final reports including summaries of key performance indicators, industry engagement and financial reports. Ad hoc reporting will be required as needed.

The Operations Manager will oversee the scientific operations of the centre which includes: establishing the research program with the Academic Director; contributing to the design of research projects to solve complex research problems; supporting the design and development of new testing procedures, equipment and instrumentation for advanced materials and manufacturing projects; working with area managers to support the allocation of resources and ensure cost effective project delivery; developing operational procedures to mentor and ensure technical depth within the full team across core skills; and developing procedures for engaging graduate and undergraduate learners with industry level experiences.

In addition, the Operations Manager will assist with developing research proposals and reports, reviewing research contracts and reports, and assist with developing policies and guidelines that promote the efficient operation of the institute. A critical aspect of the job involves working closely with support from within the faculty of engineering and McMaster departments such as the McMaster Industry Liaison office (MILO) and the Research Office for Administration, Development, and Support (ROADS) to ensure that operations comply with established policies and procedures.

REQUIREMENTS/QUALIFICATIONS:
Qualified applicants will hold a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in engineering, combined with 5-10 years of experience in advanced manufacturing research and demonstrated industry-academic collaborations. This position calls for independent decision making and visible leadership in the operation of the institute’s activities.
