**Working for the Department/Faculty**

The Faculty of Agricultural, Life and Environmental Sciences (ALES) and the Poultry Innovation Partnership (PIP) are looking for a dynamic, team-oriented agricultural engineer to support and maintain instrumentation at the Poultry Research Centre. ALES employs over 500 faculty and staff, 1700 undergraduate, and 600 graduate students. ALES is focused on teaching, research & community service. At the Poultry Unit, we have research infrastructure which accommodates broiler, broiler breeder, layer, turkey, and processing research. We also maintain 10 unique lines of heritage chickens. We have specialized environmental control, incubation, processing, data acquisition, feed mixing, and conventional and high tech precision feeding systems that require networking, remote access, repair, maintenance and monitoring to support our high quality research.

**Position Summary**

The Instrumentation Technician repairs, maintains, and monitors equipment and networks, and is involved in the improvement of existing systems as well as development of new systems. Reporting to the Poultry Innovation Partnership Principal Investigator, the Instrumentation Technician performs preventative maintenance and repairs on research equipment and assists with animal handling, meat processing and dissections. This position provides data acquisition and quality control support for poultry production, incubation, processing, and value-added processing research at the University of Alberta. The Instrumentation Technician must be able to provide technical advice on instrumentation and data acquisition needs, computer hardware and software support, and 24/7 alarm monitoring of system critical areas. The Instrumentation Technician also supports Poultry Unit equipment maintenance and data logging.

**Duties**
- Equipment setup, troubleshooting, maintenance, and repair
- Instrumentation and process Quality Control and improvement
- Direct research project support
- Support Poultry Unit technology needs

**Minimum Qualifications**
- A BSc degree in Animal Science, Computing Science, Agricultural, Biomedical, Electrical, Computer, or Mechanical Engineering or other relevant specialization is preferred. A similar technical college diploma with relevant experience will also be considered.
- An effective and proactive communicator, able to learn and adapt to new systems.
- Experience in computer networking and IT infrastructure
- Able to identify sources of equipment malfunction or other potential issues to prevent downtime, costly repairs, and data losses.
- Advanced ability with Microsoft Office software (Word, PowerPoint, Excel)
- Basic electronics and mechanical diagnosis and repair knowledge and experience.

**Preferred Qualifications**
- Programming experience (LabView, Visual Basic and some CAD experience) is preferred.
- Previous experience with U of A administrative structure and programs such as SupplyNet and PeopleSoft is an asset.
