Homeward Trust Edmonton (HTE) is a not-for-profit organization charged with ending homelessness in Edmonton. Our efforts are guided by community needs and priorities as outlined in A Place to Call Home: Edmonton’s Plan to Prevent and End Homelessness. We embrace the Housing First Philosophy which follows the principles of finding housing accommodations first and then establishing the support required by the participant to remain in a home. Homeward Trust Edmonton’s programs involve housing (such as capital project funding, property management, and sourcing access to new or existing units for participant use) and supportive services to individuals in or seeking access to housing programs.

**Position Summary**

Reporting to the Director of Finance, the Accounting Manager is responsible for all areas that relate to day-to-day accounting functions including financial reporting, the development and maintenance of accounting procedures, practices, and principles to ensure timely and accurate financial statements. The Accounting Manager will address activities that include the support of forecast and budget activities, year-end audit preparation, financial reporting, and general ledger preparation.

**Education and Experience**
- Bachelors Degree in Finance, Accounting or related field.
- Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation or actively working towards designation is preferred.
- 3 - 5 years experience in an Accountant or similar/relevant role that includes full-cycle accounting in a group-entity environment.
- Experience with Business Central 365 and/or Yardi is essential. Experience with other accounting databases/software will be considered.

**Knowledge, Skills and Abilities**
- Sound analytical, problem solving, and organizing skills with close attention to detail and accuracy.
- Thorough knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), budgeting and financial forecasting concepts.
- Understanding and knowledge of professional accounting terminology, techniques, theories, and principles.
- Technology savvy with data and/or financial analytics experience.
- Strong written, interpersonal and communication skills; experience in effectively communicating key data to team members and other departments and partners.
- Able to manage multiple priorities simultaneously.
- Able to work independently in a fast-paced environment with competing demands and frequent tight timelines.
- Utilize sound judgment to perform all assigned duties with mínimal supervision.
- In-depth understanding of finance and accounting principles, processes and controls.
- Able to exercise discretion, compassion, and empathy, and maintain confidentiality.
- Basic working knowledge of the non-profit sector, especially organizations working on homelessness and housing in Edmonton.

**Key Responsibilities**
- Support the Director with process improvement and pursuing special projects.
- Assist in the design and implementation of features and systems to enhance the department’s workflow and controls.
- Develop more efficient procedures and ensure proper use of resources while maintaining a high level of efficiency and accuracy.
- Review of payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable, adjusting journal entries, and GST and payroll tax reporting.
- Provide advice and guidance on financial systems and record keeping.
- Monitor HTE’s financial reports and ensure funding is utilized appropriately to maximize impact and achieve strategic objectives.
- Responsible for the accuracy and timeliness of financial information to facilitate timely monthly reporting.
- Provide leadership to and work with direct reports to determine objectives and goals and advise on their progress to enhance/promote professional development.
- Approval of payment batches, and cashflow oversight and forecasting.
- Responsible for banking and credit card maintenance, controls, and relationships.
- Prepare budget, financial reports and forecasts to understand the financial state of the organization.
- Lead accounting process improvements.
- Policy, process and procedure documentation.
- Oversee audit planning, fieldwork, and completion.
- Create/maintain effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
