Street Level Worker

As a member of the Street Level Team, the Street Level Worker will have a broad working knowledge of all areas of The Mustard Seed’s Basic Services. This position will assist community participants in accessing resources, participating in programs, as well as maintaining a safe and welcoming environment where staff, participants, and volunteers become a life-giving community that nurtures hope, health, and transformation. Crisis intervention and de-escalation resolution will be expected for the role as well.

**MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES**:
- Safety:
- Create a safe and healthy environment for all community participants accessing our services and programs.
- Perform periodic internal and perimeter safety checks during hours of operation.
- Ensure daily tidiness and cleanliness of the work area in addition to participating in daily sanitization of high touch areas.
- Enforce guest suspensions when necessary.
- Provide non-violent crisis intervention and use de-escalation techniques as required.
- Community:
- Foster meaningful relationships with supervisors, co-workers, volunteers and community participants.
- Collaborate with community participants to encourage positive changes in lifestyle and behavior through supportive relationships and day-to-day interactions.
- Support community participants’ dignity by seeking to identify their needs in a respectful manner.
- Programs:
- Participate in creating, implementing, and facilitating programs.
- Create opportunities for volunteers to learn about and contribute to the mission and vision of The Mustard Seed.
- Administrative:
- Answer phone calls and sign in guests using our information database.
- Maintain specific records such as statistics, volunteers, reports, incident reports, and other computer files.
- Process and maintain incoming/outgoing mail for staff and community participants, faxing, photocopying and calendar of events.
**OTHER DUTIES**
- Respond to conflicts in a healthy, respectful and safe manner.
- Model healthy relationships with community participants and volunteers through listening, advising and providing appropriate referrals.
- Assist community participants in accessing The Mustard Seed services available in the Drop-In programs and activities.
- Assist with onsite Food Services programs as needed.
- Participate in all staff training (e.g., First Aid, ASIST, Non-violent Crisis Intervention, etc.) and attend meetings as required.
- Other duties and site-related duties may be assigned when required.
**MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS**
- Experience working within the culture of the inner city and/or with people experiencing poverty or homelessness is preferred. A demonstrated passion to be involved in ending homelessness in Alberta is essential.
- Strong computer skills (competency in Microsoft Office programs such as MS Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, SharePoint, etc.) are essential.
- Experience working in a fast-paced, high-demand environment is required.
- Experience working in a volunteer-based organization is considered an asset.
- Knowledge of and experience with individuals experiencing mental illness and addictions is an asset.
- Food Safety training is an asset.
- A positive attitude with strong interpersonal skills and the ability to relate well to people from diverse backgrounds.
- Strong proactive, self-starter characteristics including collaboration skills.
- Strong organizational skills, the ability to multi-task, prioritize, and problem-solve effectively.
- Excellent conflict resolution and de-escalation skills.
- The ability to learn and implement new skills quickly and adapt to change.
**WORKING CONDITIONS**
- The position requires a flexible schedule with some shifts occurring in the evening or on weekends.
- Moderate physical effort is required. Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. Considerable periods of standing, walking, cleaning, sorting and typing; mainly indoors and some outdoors.
- High mental effort is required to preemptively identify and assess conflict, problem solve, maintain healthy boundaries, and provide empathetic support for people facing extreme personal struggles.
- May be exposed to sharps and other harm reduction supplies.
- May be exposed to or required to respond to overdoses and other verbal or physical incidents.
