The Regina Open Door Society (RODS) is a non-profit organization that provides settlement and

integration services to refugees and immigrants in Regina. RODS is committed to meeting the needs of newcomers by offering programs and services that enable them to achieve their goals and participate fully in the larger community.

The Regina Open Door Society Inc. is seeking a qualified individual to staff a full-time term position of Settlement Support Worker in School Counselor. The start date for this position February 26th 2024 to March 16,2024 with possibility of extension.

The Settlement Social Worker in Schools (SSWIS) program is a shared partnership between the Regina Open Door Society (RODS), the Regina Public School Board (RPSB) Regina Catholic Schools, Conseil de Ecoles Fransaskoises, PVSD and Immigration Refugee and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). It is an outreach program to help newcomer students and their families settle in their school and community.

Reporting to the Manager of Settlement and Family Unit, the primary responsibility of this position is to connect newly arrived families to specialized services and resources in the school and community to promote settlement and foster student achievement. Duties include:

- Assess students and parents' settlement needs and assist with the development of an action plan
- Conduct a program-specific (secondary) assessment with students and their The assessment will include the exploration of relevant factors in regards to basic family information, literacy in first language, education and occupational background, housing and financial situations, significant health issues, family dynamic's (changes in roles and relationships in the family) safety issues: risk of depression, suicide, abuse, etc., community connections and friends, awareness of and access to needed program and services, and the clients' expectations and hopes for the future.
- Assist school Settlement Support Worker in Schools staff in dealing with complex cases affecting newcomer parents and students
- Provide culturally sensitive counselling to students and their families to assist in exploring options for solutions through a problem-solving approach.
- Through home visits and other outreach strategies, provide outreach to newly-arrived including hard to reach families
- Facilitate /deliver information sessions and workshops to school personnel to foster an understanding of the culture and the unique challenges of immigrant and refugee
- Consult with school personnel on settlement and culture issues affecting immigrant /refugee students
- Establish partnerships and liaise with community agencies and government programs.
- Assist other service providers to serve immigrant and refugee students and their families better
- Through a cooperative effort with school personnel, identify at-risk youth and provide counselling, education and referral if needed.
- Provide immediate intervention in crises; establish links between clients and available resources in the community,
- Maintain/ share client information and files following RODS Privacy and funder
- Participate in and lead Case management meetings
- Link newcomer students and families to resources in the school and the community, assisting students and families in dealing with problems of adjustments to the school environment and cultural interpretation challenges.

**Desired** **qualifications/education**:
This position requires the knowledge and awareness of the challenges common to high
- risk refugee/immigrant youth and families and the cultural values and practices within the refugee/immigrant communities. Requirements will also include knowledge of the settlement process (orientation, adaptation, integration), the demonstrated ability to relate to youth and families undergoing high degrees of stress and the aptitude to handle high stress and emotionally demanding work environments. Knowledge of the work environment and philosophy/values of Regina school systems, as well as the needs of immigrant/refugee and community resources, is also essential. Other Requirements Include:

- A bachelor Social Work degree and 2 years related work experience are position
- Excellent communication (oral and written),
- Counselling, cross-cultural, and organizational

**Other **Requirements**:

- Saskatchewan Class 5 driver's license
- Clean drivers abstract
- Criminal Record Check

The hours of work are Monday to Friday from 8:15 AM to 3:45 PM. All positions at RODS require a clean criminal record/child abuse registry check. The annual salary for this position is $51056.97 ($29.09 per hour) RODS Wage scale Professional 1 Step 1 category).
