**DESCRIPTION**:
Under the general direction of the Supervisor, Corporate Finance & Compliance, the Internal Controls Advisor will primarily be responsible for assisting Finance and other business areas responsible for key internal processes and controls under Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) with documenting, recommending solutions/design, and ensuring ongoing compliance. This position will be active in SOX compliance requirements, management testing of internal controls, and process related to the CEO/CFO sub-certification.
**DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE (but not limited to)**:
- Assist in the development and maintenance of policies and procedures to strengthen internal controls and ongoing SOX and Regulatory compliance.
- Assist Finance and other business areas with updating and maintaining documentation (including flowcharts, narratives, risk control matrices, and segregation of duties charts)
- Assist with the design of internal controls to support assessment of the effectiveness of internal controls over financial reporting (ICFR) and attestation from external auditors.
- Develop and execute testing procedures to support management’s review of internal controls (e.g. financial reporting, operational, and fraud).
- Assist with developing and understanding flow of transactions, developing management review controls and recommending appropriate controls over system generated data or reports.
- Collaborate with process owners and others to build knowledge and understanding of risks and controls.
- Identify and recommend opportunities to strengthen the control environment or to improve operational efficiency, work with process owners and management to implement and follow up on implementation results.
- Support effective communication with stakeholders by contributing content to periodic and ad hoc process owner meetings, at which expectations are clarified, changes in regulation are shared, and status is communicated.
- Liaise with Fortis Inc. and internal Finance management around developments, progress and regular status reports, issues and deficiency management.
- Partner with Internal Audit to identify control deficiencies and provide support to financial process owners and control activity owners in the deficiency evaluation, documentation and remediation process.
- Update and track the inventory of control deficiencies and other internal control issues.
- Recommend solutions to address remediation of control deficiencies in supporting assessment of operating effectiveness and follow up on implemented solutions, which may include management testing.
- Coordinate with Internal Audit to provide training to process owners and management.
- Support month-end, quarter-end and year-end finance deliverables
- Lead and support finance compliance assessments and deliverables
- Lead and support adoption of new accounting pronouncements
- Develop, support and coordinate accounting and controls analysis such as, but not limited to changes in accounting policy discussions, Environmental, Sustainability & Governance standards and disclosures.
- Special projects and other duties as assigned.
**KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES**:
- Working knowledge of accounting principles and procedures, preferably US GAAP.
- Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills.
- Analytical and critical thinking skills to perform independent analysis with attention to detail.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain effective relationships with various levels within an organization, demonstrated by good communication and interpersonal skills.
- Effective organizational and time management skills to effectively manage multiple priorities and competing demands within tight deadlines.
- Demonstrated initiative in recognizing opportunities for improvement and efficiency, with a willingness to challenge status quo.
- Demonstrated ability to carry projects and initiatives to completion while working successfully with various groups throughout the organization.
**REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS**:
- Degree with a major in Accounting or Finance plus a minimum of 5 years of related experience; an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
- Minimum of 2 years of direct experience developing and documenting processes and controls that are compliant with US SOX standards, required.
- Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation required.
