**Job Description**:
In accordance with the Vision, Purpose, and Values, and strategic direction of the Vancouver Island Health Authority (Island Health) patient and staff safety is a priority and a responsibility shared by everyone; as such, the requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position.

Reporting to the Director, Medical Imaging, the Leader, Radiation Safety, is responsible for administering and coordinating of the Vancouver Island Heath Authority (VIHA) radiation protection program and for ensuring that all activities involving radiation sources such as ionizing substances and radiation emitting devices, are conducted in accordance with applicable policies and procedures. This includes, monitoring and auditing compliance with various regulations and licensing conditions required by government and regulatory agencies, inspecting radiation equipment and facilitating compliance to regulations, investigating radiation related incidents, promoting safe practices and conducting internal audits of practices, and providing education and training in radiation safety matters.

The Leader's primary working relationships are with the Manager of Imaging Systems, physicians, members of VIHA's Radiation Safety Committee, Wellness and Safety. The Leader directs the work of Nuclear Medicine Radiation Safety Officers (RSO) and Medical Imaging Quality Control Technologists. The Leader works with the public, VIHA staff, and medical staff in the course of radiation related investigations. The Leader also provides regulation and certification for radiation safety within VIHA.

**QUALIFICATIONS**:
**Education, Training And Experience**:
A level of education, training and experience equivalent to a masters degree in medical physics and five years of recent, related experience in radiation protection.

**Skills And Abilities**:

- Recognized supervisory/management courses, courses in the Transportation of Dangerous Goods, and radiation safety training, such as the Radiation Safety Officer course, are considered assets.
- Demonstrated ability to develop, implement, and enforce radiation safety programs including physician and staff credentialing radiation safety training programs.
- Demonstrated ability to conduct safety inspections to ensure compliance with federal and provincial regulatory body standards. This includes inspections of use and shielding for all ionizing radiation substances and radiation emitting devices.
- Knowledge of radiation safety procedures, standards, and protocols including radiation waste management.
- Knowledge of radiation shielding and acceptance testing for radiation emitting devices.
- Ability to provide patient and personnel consultation for radiation exposure.
- Ability to work diplomatically and persuasively to establish and maintain effective working relationships with individuals, groups and agencies.
- Demonstrated interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated teaching and counselling ability of patients and staff.
- Ability to operate radiation testing/monitoring and other related equipment.
- Knowledge of computer systems related to medical imaging.
- Demonstrated computer skills.
- Physical ability to carry out duties of the position.
