**Position Summary**

The vehicle operators in Distribution Operations perform a variety of delivery procedures and operate some of the largest vehicles in the University's fleet. Incumbents in these positions are required to maintain a high level of campus knowledge in order for Distribution Operations to meet its operational objectives. Incumbents respond to inquiries and initiate actions to resolve problems as they arise.

As Vehicle Operators they are responsible for the cargo they carry, from the time they load it onto their vehicles until it is delivered to the destination. They are responsible for the transportation of dangerous goods to and from departments/faculty units.

Vehicle Operators operate various types of University and rental vehicles (mini/commercial vans, 3- and 5-ton trucks, one ton cube vans). In addition, they operate various pieces of equipment that expedite loading and unloading of cargo. Vehicle operators drive vehicles in areas that are congested with staff and students at all times. Intensive visual concentration is required.

**Duties**
- Inspection of vehicles prior to departing the warehouse
- Sort, load, pickup and deliver mail parcels, packages, courier documents, cylinders, lumber, pipe, plywood and metal sheets, crates of all sizes, furnishings of all types, new and surplus equipment, tack boards, tables and chairs to and from customers both on and off campus Responsible for obtaining signatures/scanning bar-coded deliveries in order to confirm and verify that the correct package was delivered intact to the correct destination within a reasonable period of time
- Communicates with fellow employees to ensure work is done safely and expeditiously
- Prioritizes daily workload assigned by either the dispatcher or supervisor to best utilize time and adjusts schedules to best fit campus requirements
- Ensures that Transportation of Dangerous Goods regulations are followed when dealing with inbound or outbound shipments of dangerous goods
- Responsible for mail sorting and mail metering
- Responsible for reporting all safety incidents and near-misses immediately

**Minimum Qualifications**
- Minimum Grade 12
- Valid Class 5 driver's license (no GDL); Defensive Driving Training; Must pass the U of A Fleet Safety Driver's Evaluation and maintain the U of A Authorized Driver status (minimum age 19)
- Must understand and follow all identified safety processes
- Current certification in Transportation of Dangerous Goods
- Workplace Hazardous Material Information System certification
- Training on Receipt tracking system - operation of Palm Pilots
- Training related to proper handling procedures of Radioactive and Biohazardous materials
- Ability to operate equipment, I.e. forklift, power-jack, pallet-jack, Johnson bar, 2-4-6 wheel carts
- Must be able to lift/carry 50+ plus
- Current understanding of the campus community as well as knowledge of its Departments/Faculty locations and their respective delivery points
- Ability to maintain intense visual concentration
