The Food Safety Inspection Branch of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food, is responsible for the licensing, inspection, and compliance functions in relation to the commercial trade of fish within British Columbia under the provincial Fish and Seafood Act (FSA) and the Fish and Seafood Licensing Regulation (FSLR). To help protect public health, we work in partnership with the seafood sector by promoting seafood safety and ensuring compliance with the FSA.

As a Fisheries Inspector, you will be responsible for conducting inspections, investigations, making licensing recommendations of provincially licensed fish processing and seafood-handling facilities, and promoting compliance under the FSA and FSLR. When violations or offences occur, you have the ability to enforce regulations and impose fines or other sanctions against non-compliant parties.

Working independently, you will be a key player in building strong working relationships with both industry and other government agencies, including the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, and Regional Health Authorities. As a collaborative professional, you have the ability to resolve problems and exercise discretion in complex situations.

**Job Requirements**:

- Degree or Diploma in a related discipline such as administrative law, investigation and enforcement, criminology, environmental health science or food science.
- Consideration may be given for compliance & enforcement training such as the Justice Institute of British Columbia programs or similar education/training institution. Preference may be given to applicants with degree or diploma in food science.
- 2 or more years of experience conducting inspections to monitor compliance. Preference may be given to applicants with 4 or more years of experience.
- 2 or more years of experience conducting investigations and taking enforcement action in a regulatory field. Preference may be given to applicants with 4 or more years of experience.
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
- Valid B.C. driver’s licence.

Provisos
- Must be willing to interact with upset or irate clients.
- Must be willing and physically able to conduct fieldwork.
- Must be willing to work overtime.
- Must be willing to travel to remote locations by way of small boats, float planes and helicopters where necessary.
