**Position Description**

The psychotherapist provides therapeutic counselling /psychotherapy, group facilitation, client care, and advocacy for individuals and families with various mental health needs. This work involves conducting psychotherapy assessment, and treatment, trauma therapy, evidence-based practices that use culturally sensitive approaches and require an understanding and capacity to work with the refugee and immigrant populations in the Champlain region. Using theoretically informed, and culturally responsive treatment interventions, the psychotherapist will support clients presenting with a wide variety of issues arising from their pre and post migration experiences. The psychotherapist will provide counselling/psychotherapy to help clients manage their mental health issues, process loss, trauma, and improve emotional well-being. Working on-site and virtually, the psychotherapist will work collaboratively with our health and multicultural health navigation team and other settlement program staff to deliver programs and services that support the successful settlement and integration of refugees and other new immigrants in Ottawa. This position requires strong communications and interpersonal skills, excellent organizational abilities and exceptional cultural competency.

**Position Requirements**

**Education**
- Successful completion of a master’s level clinical training program (e.g., Counselling Psychology, Social Work, Psychology, M.Ed.)
- Registration with a professional college that authorizes the practice of psychotherapy and member in good standing with their respective college such as the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO), Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers (OCSWSSW),
- Valid professional liability insurance

**Professional Experience**
- Minimum 3-5 years counselling in a community-based setting with emphasis on psychotherapy/counselling, crisis intervention including risk assessment and safety planning; and client advocacy
- Minimum 3 years experience working with marginalized and diverse client populations, specifically with refugees and immigrants

**Knowledge, Skills and Abilities**
- Demonstrated knowledge of short
- and-long term strength-based approaches in psychotherapy assessment and counselling in a multidisciplinary community health setting
- Knowledge and commitment to work within an evidence-based practice framework and reflective practice
- Strong clinical knowledge and skills in at least one of the following: brief counselling, narrative therapy, solution-focused counselling/coaching, CBT, Mindfulness; Narrative Exposure Therapy, other practice-based clinical interventions, and evidence-based trauma counselling
- Clinical experience in crisis intervention, safety planning, and suicide and risk assessments
- Experience working with families/couples and individuals in a brief counselling capacity
- Ability to work with marginalized persons from a client-centered, empowering, and strengths-based approach
- Able to collaborate with other professionals (i.e. settlement workers, health and allied health-care professionals).
- Specific knowledge / experience working with new Canadians, immigrants who have experienced war-related trauma, grief, loss, moderate to severe mental health challenges, community conflict and issues related to family life, violence, poverty, oppression, discrimination and stress.

**Language Capability**
- Fluency in English is required
- Fluency in Arabic, Dari, and Pashtu is highly desirable
- Fluency in any other languages is an asset
