Port Alberni, Canada The Salvation Army Full time

**HOURS**:

- 8 hours (one day) per week

**KEY RESPONSIBILITIES**:

- Represent and work within the mission, vision & values of The Salvation Army
- Use a client-centered approach by consistently demonstrating compassion, respect and empathy
- Develop and, and once approved, implement a Peer Mentorship program for shelter guests with appropriate protocols, reporting requirements, program evaluations, etc.
- Recruits, orients, trains and provides ongoing performance management to volunteer peer mentors who are willing to serve in full alignment with the goals of the mentorship program
- Establish criteria for assessing the readiness of Shelter guests to participate in peer mentorships
- In consultation with the Community Ministries Director/Shelter Manager, Shelter Supervise and/or Caseworker identify Shelter guests who are ready for peer mentorship and initiate dialogue to confirm their interest
- In consultation with the Community Ministries Director/Shelter Manager match approved Shelter guests with approved Peer Mentors
- Work closely with the Caseworker in supporting individuals who pursue mentorship as one means to achieve the goals they establish within the Pathway of Hope program
- Ensure mentors maintain and update all appropriate documentation/case notes related to guests involved in the Peer Mentorship program
- Monitor effectiveness of mentor-mentee relationships and trouble-shoots if/when issues providing appropriate mediation/conflict resolution; where appropriate, will authorize a change in mentor for the benefit of the mentee
- Support, where and when possible, the efforts of all guests and co-workers
- Prepare/complete all reports required by the funder and The Salvation Army
- Perform other related duties as assigned

**QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS**:

- _NOTE: For some jobs, you may be required to provide validated educational documentation. _
- Post-secondary education in a social services field, an asset
- Current valid BC driver’s license and clean driving record, an asset
- CPR, First Aid, Naloxone, and Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Training or obtain as condition of employment
- Successful obtainment of clearance through the Criminal Records Review Program

**Experience**:

- Preference given to those who have prior related experience in social services environment; specifically working with individuals who are homeless or at risk of being homeless

**Required Skills/Knowledge**:

- Direct, personal experience with poverty/homelessness and proven success in breaking the cycle an asset
- (Note: Peer Mentors are individuals who have experienced homelessness and overcome and can now support others as they move forward with life goals aimed at finding stable housing.)_
- Effective communication skills, attentive listening, and alertness to reactions of guests
- Strong written communication skills - guest progress reports, communications with co-workers, etc.
- Strong organizational and leadership skills; able to effectively recruit, support and supervise volunteers
- Adaptability to change and frequent interruptions
- Willingness to work with people from diverse cultural backgrounds
- Computer and word processing ability

- Team oriented and able to take initiative
- Ability to work with minimum supervision in a fast-paced environment
- High standards of integrity and confidentiality
- Background check consent
- A clear vulnerable sector screening

- Completion of our online Armatus Abuse Training and required Health and Safety training
