Detailed Overview: Reporting to the Manager, Health Services or designate, the Psychologist is in charge of psychological services and is responsible for the provision of a full range of psychodiagnostic services for children and youth, including administration, scoring and interpretation of test batteries, report writing and debriefing referral sources as to test results. The Psychologist has full program development responsibility and also provides consultation to the referral sources regarding issues relevant to the practice of clinical psychology. The Psychologist provides psychological assessment and diagnosis, and collaborates with physicians and other care providers regarding treatment planning for children and youth experiencing an acute psychiatric episode. In addition to direct service provision, the psychologist initiates and carries out program evaluation and client outcome research. Responsibilities:
- Provides a full range of psychological services to children and/or youth experiencing an acute psychiatric episode.
- Provides and conducts comprehensive neuropsychological assessments of client functioning to identify, evaluate, and determine underlying disorders, levels of cognitive function, factors contributing to functional impairment, issues of mental competency, and conditions under which specific behaviours occur.
- Provides evidence-based psychological treatment to clients addressing a wide variety of presenting clinical issues and contributes to the design of interventions to circumvent problems, reduce problem behaviour, and to reinforce client skills and abilities.
- Responsible for program design, service planning, assessment and treatment for psychological services provided to children/youth.
- Provides consultation to various treatment teams on assessment and treatment issues, which may involve a direct consultation with a formal assessment, co-therapy, or discussing concerns regarding a particular client; leads and coordinates multi-disciplinary service interventions; consults with community professionals and agencies on psychological issues.
- Maintains liaison with referring physicians and other professional regarding clients' total care.
- Provides assessment and treatment information to families as appropriate. In collaboration with the treatment team.
- Provides education on mental health issues for children/adolescents to hospital and/or community teams, referral agencies and care givers.
- Supports the development of evidence-based clinical guidelines and pathways for psychiatric child/youth clients across the hospital and community. Assists with the analysis of data in order to make necessary adjustments to guidelines and pathways.
- Contributes to the development of policies and procedures that will guide the care of clients.
- Performs ongoing clinical research to keep program content current and relevant, and provides education to team members in this regard.
- Prepares and presents reports and proposals that support clinical practice as well as program research and evaluation.
- Participates in short and long term planning for Child/Youth Services and in the establishment and auditing of quality assurance activities.
- Attends and participates in appropriate multidisciplinary conferences, medical rounds, service and department meetings.
- Acquires and maintains appropriate testing and clinical materials.
- Supervises psychology students and interns when required.
