About Our Opportunity
The Art Gallery of Nova Scotia is recruiting a motivated individual to join our team as a Manager of Exhibitions. In this role, you will report to the Chief Curator and will be responsible for the oversight of the functions and resources of the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia's curatorial and preparation departments.
You will lead a team of assistant curators and preparators, and coordinate a schedule comprised of temporary exhibitions, permanent collection rotations, touring exhibitions, and other projects (e.g., publications, commissions, and off-site exhibitions). The Manager will be responsible for administering the corresponding budgets, and works with staff across other areas of the Gallery as well as partner institutions, community stakeholders, and exhibiting artists.
Primary Accountabilities
Maintain and update the overall exhibitions schedule and individual project timetables and implementation in consultation with the Chief Curator as well as the preparation and collections/registration departments.
Act as liaison between the exhibitions and finance departments regarding budgetary issues.
Lead cross-departmental dialogue throughout each phase of the installation and de-installation process.
Oversee contracts and agreements for exhibitions and manages the processes and relationships of touring exhibitions developed in-house and on loan to the Gallery.
Manage curatorial and preparation staff and ensure clear communication on direction and expectations.
Generate and evaluate exhibitions-related contracts and agreements.
Compile information needed for exhibition marketing materials
Work closely and support the collections/registration department on collections and loan-related issues.
Qualifications and Experience
To be successful in this role you have a University degree in a relevant discipline with several years of related work experience. You also have knowledge and experience in art gallery best practices and the demonstrated ability to clearly communicate art-related issues to diverse audiences, this should be clearly demonstrated in your cover letter and resume.
You have strong interpersonal skills, and the demonstrated ability to supervise and motivate a large team of specialists, while valuing a diverse, and inclusive work environment. You demonstrate strong communication and interpersonal skills and have a proven ability to be innovative, lead and execute addressing issues and demands with diplomacy and tact. You have time management skills to successfully develop and manage multiple priorities with competing deadlines. You can develop and maintain partnerships with internal and external stakeholders, and have demonstrated skills in maintaining these relationships on interpretation and building maintenance projects.
You have demonstrated organizational leadership experience, including experience in human resource and financial management, and business planning and strategic development.
Success in this role includes being innovative and having a broad way of thinking, while staying current with respect to broader impacts (current events, legislative changes and national trends) and is diligent on how opinions and perspectives effect stakeholders and partners regarding collection issues.
